| yeah, i was down at lackland AFB about 2 summers ago, and i saw a bunch of those things. i believe they don't fire, but i will ask some of our FNG's next weekend to verify. i think it has more to do with the whole "battlefield airman" concept theair force is pushing.
basically we are now doing more"outside the wire" missions as the army is overtasked. they want all troops to be more familiar with the weapon. asfor why they are using16's, the m-4 is'nt really prevailiant outside of more specific careers such as security, eod, tac-p's and pj's. and most of the 16's i have seen have been updated m16 A1's that have never been used.
