It wouldn't have changed things. He unholstered the gun and pulled the trigger. I used to use a gun with a thumb safety. I practiced dropping the safety as I drew. It happened automatically. When the gun was on target, it was "hot". Otherwise, it is a club. This makes a Glock and any other safety laden gun the same. You will put it in the condition to fire with the draw. It won't go off, unless your training doesn't include keeping your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
I also get tired of the exploding Glock comments. I've seen pictures of almost every make and model of gun that blew up. Just like saying too many 10/22 are finicky with ammo, when you have millions more guns out there than other models, you will see more ugly ducklings. I haven't seen one that was proven to be something other than an unsafely high charged round. That will blow up any gun, polygonal or not.
XDs will do the same thing.
