Rifled slugs go in a smooth barrel. They are also called foster slugs. They have a hollow back and the skirt is suppose to expand to fill the bore and center it in the barrel the full length of the barrel. They do not impart any spin to the slug.

Saboted slugs in a rifled barrel. The rifled barrel is intended to be as straigh walled as possible and be rifled to grip the sides of the slug to impart spin. To better take advantage of this the saboted slugs are engineer to tighter grip in the barrel. Most have a squeeze fit with the plastic sabot to spin the slug and prevent tumbling.

Lead sided foster type slugs in a rifled bore will lead up the rifling very rapidly.
