From having talked to some I believe I have your answer. They explained their belief in nutshell comes from the bible verse that says owe no man nothing. "hooking" up to society would mean that you would owe man for your electric bill. It's not that electricity is evil it's how you get it. Also they have the whole "ultra" modest thing that not only defines how they dress, but how they live and what technologies if any they will use. They have elders that decide for their communities what is acceptable. So their communities vary from one to the next on what "lines they won't cross. Some will use the pay phone down the road others will not. Some will use the LED lights on the buggies, others will not. It even gets to the point that some will have buttons showing on their clothes others consider this taboo.
