I say definetly keep the wood and chop the barrel if you can get it done. Synthetic on a lever is just not right. Especially if you have a piece of walnut. I was gonna put together something similar on a 336 I had, but ended up trading it off before I could chop it. Yes your going to lose some juice with a shorter barrel, but sure would make for one quick handling nice brush gun.
