Why would you want to shoot a twelve pointer during the summer in velvet when you can wait for him to fatten up and shoot him during the regular INDIANA deer seasons. I think that if it is legal to take bucks with dep. permits the antlers should be forfeited because the program is aimed at herd reduction in specific areas NOT antler reduction.
It is legal to take bucks as well as does with the dep tags. But you must give DNR one side of the antlers so that people aren't out there trying to trophy hunt out of season. But they do prefer you to take does cause that will do more to reduce the herd. But as the area dnr biologist told me, if its brown and passes in front of you, shoot it. lol
