| Anything with a detachable magazine could be a problem some places unless you're careful not to violate their magazine limits.
How about a side-by-side 12ga "coach gun"? I can't think of anything farther from an "evil black rifle," and it should be legal anywhere that guns are no banned completely. It takes a little extra practice/instructions with ammo management, but you can use one for defense pretty well.
