Cheap is important here. And size. the high point carbine is pretty darn short, along the lines of a cruiser shotgun. The only question is the pistol grip and an ATI stock would convert it to a thumbhole stock.
Anyone here had one for any length of time? Do they hold up?

With shipping and transfer you can still be under $200 on a Hi-Point Carbine.
I have 2, my wife appropriated the first one.
I've had the one for 6+ yrs put 1000 rds thru it.
Still shoots like a new one.
I don't care for Hi-Point Pistols but the carbines are Sweet.
I highly recommend them.

Anything with a detachable magazine could be a problem some places unless you're careful not to violate their magazine limits.

Hi-Point only makes a 10rd mag for the carbine so it shouldn't be a problem.
You can get a 2 mad pouch that attaches to the but stock.
So loading would be easy and quick.
