In looking around for ammo I see mention of the term "silver tip" on occasion. Example:

AIM Polish 7.62x54R 147grn Silver Tip Light Ball Polish 7.62x54R 147grn Silver Tip Light Ball

It says its a FMJ, but also a silver tip. :dunno:

    So what does that mean?
That is has a mild steel core. PS that ammo shoots like hell in all 3 of my nagants. The Grey silver tip(arsenal 21)production of 1986 comes in the sealed metal tins is the best surplus I have ever shot).I got that ammo at the last 1500 gun and knife show very cheap(44 a tin I think). Also silver bear,if you can find it is very cheap good ammo.
I would not order another case of that cooper washed for anything.

The ammo I was talking about is Hungarian.

Ok, good stuff. So what about the other 7.62x54R that AIM sells:

AIM Russian 7.62x54R FMJ Russian 7.62x54R FMJ

    Good? bad? etc
I do not buy any of the cooper washed stuff any more, just never had very good luck with it(3 different types now i think). I looked for the ammo I was talking about with the grey case...can not find any online for sale though.
I did find the silver bear i was talking about though...not surplus prices though.
    A754SPN-SILVER BEAR 7.62x54R 203GR SP

If i ever see any more if the 21 in grey cases i will buy as much as possible.

ok, so related to 'silver tip' ammo.......... is silver tip, or light ball ammo usually a steel core instead of lead?

I found out today that the range I go to does not allow steel core ammo, so I want to make sure to avoid it.

    thanks,

You would have to look up the arsenal number to know for sure. But most silver tip bullets mean that is has a mild steel core.So in your case i would not use any silver tip at your range. The wolf I posted earlier would be good as it is a lead tip and lead core.

    Pull a bullet and look.

Most of the 7.62x54r surplus I have laying around here is steel jacketed, copper washed, with a lead core. I do have a fairly large variety.

The remaining silver tipped ammo is in my SHTF ammo box, if that tells you how well it shoots in my M44.

This ammo is not "Steel Core".
Some russian ammo has a Bi-Metal Jacket (Steel & copper).
The last steel core I'm aware of was some Chinese (Norinco) and it is no longer imported.

    Karl,

I was thinking that, but didn't want to state it and be wrong.

I was thinking that the steel core stuff was outlawed for importation - due to the steel core.

    Is this correct?

(I'd really like to find some AP incendiary rounds just to have on hand. I've heard that they're legal and not legal. I really don't know.)
