If I could only have 1 optic that I had to rotate on various rifles(or even just one rifle) it is going to be an ACOG(4x)

It is the jack of all trades and master of none, but it's my fav.

Yes, Scutter01 found exactly the scope I mentioned. I should mention that I do not own one of the Millett's and I have no long term experience with that scope. I don't know how rugged it is (if that is of concern) or how it will hold up over time. I did get to zero a rifle with one mounted on it last year, which took some time, so I got to spend an afternoon looking through one and I liked it.

Would I choose it over a red dot? It depends . . . Would I choose it over other low powered variables? Depends on my budget. If I had $800 to spend, I'd probably get a Trijicon (I forget the name... Accupoint, maybe?) 1-4X. Enormous eye relief, very good glass (like an ACOG), rugged, two types of illumination.

If I knew all of my shooting would be 100 yards and less, I'd go with a red dot. I also would only get either and Aimpoint or an EOTech. I've never been satisfied with cheap or midrange red dots.

If I planned on shooting past 100 yards, I'd strongly consider it. You can get good hits with a red dot at 100, 200, 300 yards, but it's a lot easier with a little magnification, especially with a smaller target.

For a house gun: red dot
For a CQB gun: red dot
For a 3-gun rifle: depends on where you shoot (distances available)
For general purpose: red dot or low power variable

Budget related

I'm a Bushnell guy through and through. When I started this rifle shooting thing, I found Bushnell Scopechiefs on closeout at Natchez SS and bought several. Wish I could find more of them! I've got 4200s down to Banners on a variety of guns. 100% of our shooting is off a rest of some sort at either paper or p dogs. For the most part ranges run 100-400 yards. That means variables that go up to at least 20X for these high-mileage eyes. 6-24 4200s and 7-21 3200s are working extremely well on our centerfire varminters. The lower dollar exception is the Mueller APV 4.5-14. I put one on a CZ 452 Trainer in .17 HMR and it is pretty good for the $$. It's whacked a gaggle of p dogs out to 150 or so.

The Bushnell Elite 4200 and 3200 scopes are overlooked and underrated all too often. I have an Elite 3200 10X with mil-dots that is a really good scope. Unfortunately I have nothing to put under it that makes the bang noise (yet).

On my Savage Mark-II I have a Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 AO scope. I believe they retail for ~ $120 or so. It's a very nice piece of glass for a .22Long Rifle.

I bought the Millett about 2 weeks ago. I have yet to shoot with it or even mount it. I picked it up from Midway. Great price came with batteries and extras too. I liked the idea of having near 1X red dot like ability and also some power 4X when needed. The rings I bought were for the carry handle in 1". My bad, the scope is 30mm. I just ordered some 30mm rings. Maybe next week I can get it zeroed in and let you know what a newbie thinks of it.

Leupold Mark 4's for my rifles. They are the cat's ass in my opinion. A little pricey, but boy do they perform and can take a beating.

Leupold does custom reticles too, or at least will put any reticle they make in your scope for you. Their warranty and service are excellent as well.
