i was shooting a lot of 3 gun during the time frame that rhino mentions. we found the low power variable superior to the "hot" setup of the time which was a 3x9 plus a reddot. the dot was positioned so you canted the gun a bit for the hoser stages. we found that if the eye relief was set for your natural mount of the rifle, that the lowest power setting acted quite like a big ghost ring. very fast and quite positive. dial it to 4x (i was using a leupold 1x4 with custom reticle) and you were good to go out to 350 or 400 (the longest shot we saw in those days.) still have the scope on my race gun and see no reason to change.
