What have you found to be the most accurate bullet (jacketed, for reloading) in your model of .308?
What rate of twist do you have?

Not sure what the rate of twist is, but have gotten 1/3 MOA accuracy out of 155gr A-Max bullets over H4895. Not the fastest loads, but man do they group.

I've used 168 sierra TMK's and 178 A-Max's out of a 1:12 factory Remington barrel. Even with the very poorly cut chamber, I can get .6 to .7 moa out of them from the prone. Best results have been with hotter loads of RL-15 and IMR-8208 XBR.

    .308 Winchester....

I load for my Son's Remington 700 HB .308 Win. I think?? His is 1:12 twist.

This rifle likes Hornady 168gr. A-Max, and Sierra 168gr. Match King projectiles load on top of Win.-760/H414, or Hodgdon BL-C(2) powders.

My Son, with this rifle, and loads, can produce .5" to .75" three shot groups @ 100yds. on MOST outings...Bill.

My 13 twist Kreiger barrel shoots 155 Palma bullets the best at 2950 fps. My 10 twist M1A doesn't care. Everything from 150, 155, 168, 175 bullets are all inside the 10 ring.

IMR 4064 powder is the best. Every other powder is second.

I have a 1:10 twist that likes the 168 A-Max over Matchkings. I had somewhat good accuracy out of 180 A-Max, but the 168's were much better.

Most of the top F-TR guys are shooting the heavies at moderate MV's. 200+ grain hybrids with 1:10 or 1:9 twist. I personally have had good results with 175 SMKs out of a 11.25 barrel. I just got a 1:10 barrel and am either going to try to the Berger 185 Juggernauts or the 185 hybrids.

Similar here, My 13 twist PALMA rifle wears a HART barrel. M1a wears a Douglas. Winchester model 70 is 12 twist and shoots anything, but 168's are best. After kegs of 4064 and H4895, I also had good results with Varget

I tried 4064, but just couldn't get consistent accuracy with it. Similarly, Varget would often have 3-4 good shots with a flyer 3/4 to 1" off. I've got mad seating depth issues with my Remmy barrel, though, so I've wondered if they would do better if I could seat closer to the lands. The powders I mentioned up thread have been more forgiving IME. But that's the nice thing about having such a wealth of options, we all get to find what works best in particular rifles.

I have a 40x short action single shot in 300 win that I have thought of trying the 185 Juggernauts and see if they shoot better than 190 MK's

I'd have a hard time not stepping up to the 210s or 215s in 300WM

I can see that, I ended up with a gift from a friend that is still enlisted about 10 yrs ago of 5 or 6 cans of uncle Sams 190 grn 300 win ammo. some was Federal and some was Win. And this rifle really likes it and with that I just never devated away from the 190 MK's ... I guess I should look into newer designs and heavier bullets.. Thanks.

This target is at 250 yds +/- earlier this past spring with my M700 Varmint with 168 OTMs over 40.4 gr of Ramshot TAC. Keep in mind I'm not the worlds best shot. I need to chrony and test this load some more.

For normal pressure loads, sure...but H4895 gives you the added flexibility of reducing pressure, velocity and recoil. It also meters better than 4064, although it may not be as well-suited for gas-operated guns.

When all else fails in a 308, go back to the old tried and true Camp Perry NM load of a 168 gr Sierra BTHP match and IMR 3031 in Federal Match brass.

I shoot an Armalite NM 20" 1:10 twist and have had good results with 168 Amax, as well as 168 SMK. For hunting rounds I use 165 gr SST.
I was using Varget, but moved to 8208 XBR and have had great success (and it meters better than Varget).

H4895 is only a tad faster than 4064. I've loaded many 8 pounders of pull down powder of it for gas guns over the years. Never a problem.
Since I was a kid loading with my Grandfather I was told nothing slower in a gas gun ( M14 ) than 4064. In the early eightys I bought a NM M1A and since I was having good luck loading with 760 in my bolt gun I would break the rule and load for this new rifle with 760.
Before the first season was over I had bent the OP rod and tore the roller off the bolt. Back then under a hundred bucks and a lesson learned well.
Nowdays if I were to run a slower powder I would install one of the adj gas plugs.

In the rifles I have, I've seen the best results using a 168gr Hornady HPBT Match bullet over 8208XBR Powder. I have a 1:10 twist also.
