The only drawback I can see is cost...

Given that the commonly accepted standard (FBI protocol) for adequate penetration in tissue is 12" to 18", I can think of one BIG drawback besides cost.

So when someone posted awhile back what the "best home defense" weapon was, the answer most commonly give was.... a shotgun. For all the reasons listed above, a Glaser provides in a smaller round...

I'm not risking hitting any of my four kids or wife.... but that's just me. I normally have 3 Glaser in the top of the mag, followed by FMJ's if it ends up outside.

Right, but I think most only consider these for home defense, not carry.

I used to carry 1 mag with HP's and one with FMJ's. Now I have two with HP's and 2 with FMJ's. You never know what the situation will call for.

Except that the pellets are tiny – even smaller than birdshot, which is generally NOT recommended for defensive purposes.

What if you've fired your 3 Glasers and the fight is still on, and still inside? Do you stop shooting?

What does that have to do with anything? Adequate penetration is adequate penetration, regardless of location. If it's good enough for the house, why not carry it on the street as well?

12" to 18" is too much penetration for inside my home especially for any rounds that might miss their intended target. We have small children and a small house. However I do not use Glazer safety slugs. I have a hand load I worked up for 9mm that IMO is perfect. Its a 90gn. hollow point that is actually meant for a .380 when fired into a milk jug full of water it explodes the jug beautifully but more often than not the slug can be found rattling around still in the jug, Flat and very much resembling a dime.

Yeah..... They're not magic bullets by any means. There will always be both successes and failures as your link indicates.

Did you notice that one of the "failures" was a shot to the knee that took the whole knee out but due to the fact that the BG was still able to shoot, it's considered a "failure"???? I mean.... COME ON!!!! Would any H/P possibly do any better on a knee shot?!?!?

Actually, that one was listed under "average" because the results would've been the same using a standard HP.

However, I loved *this* one, which was listed under "success":

Florida, 9mm Glaser, distance 4 feet. A knife wielder was hit in the right shoulder under the collar bone dropping the knife. He took two steps, doubled over, going down to one knee; picked up the knife and then walked 61 yards to his residence. He was relatively mobile and dangerous for 3 minutes after being shot.
