Reccomended amounts of ammo to keep on hand?

What do all of you think is the minimum amount of ammo to keep for each cal. that you own/shoot?

Absolute bare minimum 500 but I would be rounding up more at that level.

1k for each caliber in a long term storage box.... this is ammo that you may never shoot but have just in case.

As much as:

1. You can store effectively
2. You can afford

You can't have too much ammo unless you're trying to swim. And maybe when you're on fire.

Between the wife and I, we have six 9mm's.

I keep 5,000 rounds of 9mm on hand now at all times. That might be a lot, but I got tired of looking around. An ammo shortage like we've had will never happen to me again.

I shot 350 rounds this past weekend, and replaced them today.

I think it depends on the caliber.

I'm buying my first 45ACP tomorrow, and expect to stock up 1,000 or so rounds of it.

No one answered a question from a couple pages back, and I liked it, so I'll repeat it.

What kind of ammo are we talking?

I've got upwards of 800 rounds for my .45, but only about 100 of that is for personal protection.

If zombies attack, I'd rather have the FMJ's anyway, seeing as I could kill multiple zombies with one round

Seriously though, how much and what kind? In a pinch any kind will kill, anyway, right?

Rhino has given the only logical answer I've seen so far. Theoretical numbers mean very little, but if I had only the kind of numbers that have been mentioned here so far, I would feel like a failure at preparation. There's very little more useless than a gun without ammo when the chips are down.
