Most Prius owners I know, or have met, are, to describe them simply, arrogant jerks (or jerkesses if they are female . . . or is it jerkettes?).

They tend to have an air of superiority and arrogance about them because they errantly believe they are saving the rest of us, from ourselves.

Well this should come as a shock to their eco-systems, but the new diesel Mercedes Benz E250 is a luxury cruiser that gets ever so slightly better fuel economy in real world driving tests* It also can go 900 miles on a tankful of fuel* so you get supurb fuel economy, and you don't have to keep stopping for fuel, in fact you may go for 2 weeks between fill-ups. And you get the luxury, safety and handling of the sport inspired E-Class sedan, with reasonable performance.

But you definitely pay for that.
Sister has a prius. She nor hubby are snobs about it. They got it to tow behind the RV. I drove it. I hate it and so does she but it fits their needs.

When I bought a diesel Jetta (2009) for my daughter, it got better fuel economy than a Prius and it cost less. You point is about the packaging, why can't luxury car owners also get good fuel economy? Just because some folks choose to drive a car that wraps them in the finer things in life, provides them with a good driving experience, and yields impressive safety, does not mean that they should be relegated to poor fuel economy.

Then they may be in the minority of Prius owners based on various studies, articles, etc about the attitudes of Prius owners.

And that sir, is another perfect example of the point of this thread.

The fact that an expensive luxury barge can beat a humble and timid Prius in real world fuel economy, when it is still an exceptional luxury barge and provides all the luxury barge features, just shows that the Prius puts on a great show at being a "purpose built" econo-mizer but really is not all its cracked up to be.

    Thank you sir!

I have met the snobs you speak of. I would not like them with out the Prius as a conversation point.

If you can afford the expensive wrapping I say go for it. That is the direction the world is going now. Diesel tech is on track to set the world right.

When I visited my cousin in CA a few years ago I saw more Prius' than I could imagine. The majority of them had Obama stickers on the bumper.

Electric cars are the third-worst idea in the history of mankind, preceded only by the ponzi scheme of 'social security' and socialism. Electricity is a result of a primary action. Oil has to be mined and refined and shipped and pumped. Electricity has to be produced from some source of production, transported, and stored at a ridiculously low efficiency compared to gasoline. Gasoline contains 12,000 kilowatt-hours per gallon of volume, the best current electric car battery (Tesla's) can only manage 300 watt-hours in the same approximate volume. It's not even a comparison, gasoline smokes electric cars out of the water in every sense of the word.

I don't care if I can get 300 more miles per tank if it takes multiples of the same amount of energy as required by gasoline refinement to delivery that electric energy into my car: it's still net energy loss in that case. And now Mercedes is putting these electric cars to shame and making them look like fools. I regard people championing the inefficient-in-every-sense electric-car technology as I view flat-Earthers and Holocaust-deniers: reality exists and they prefer to plug their ears and shriek that they can't hear it. Not at all surprised by this. If they decide to make this in gasoline-power, I might have to consider this as my next purchase. (I would consider diesel except I don't know how fast or when diesel reaches its gel point in the tank here in Indiana, and that in contrast gasoline has a very very low almost non-existent freeze-point which is all but unreachable except in the coldest of conditions.)

You can treat the fuel to reduce gel. I am sure you are aware of that I just had to say it.

Ford also has a new 1L engine in the fiesta. Makes more power and more torque than the 1.6 and gets 45 mpg. Oh yeah, under $19k. I've test driven them both. The fiesta was fun and the prius c made me want to run it into a pole. If it could get going fast enough.

WE drove (sis and I) a Prius to South Carolina last year to attend a funeral. It was a budget trip so we took sisters Prius. The car sucks in the comfort area. You are in a noisy box on the most uncomfortable seats I have ever endured. Milage was amazing.
That said I got a ticket in the mountains for speeding, in a freaking Prius. The State guy was great. He was laughing pretty good when he leaned in the window and said "I got-ya going pretty good back there. Had no Idea these things would go that fast"

They already make a GAS powered E-Class sedan, in fact they make offer a few different gas powered choices.

But with regards to diesel gel point, I store 500 gallons of diesel in an outside tank on my property and have filled up my daughter's Jetta in sub-Zero weather and driven it without any issues for the past several northern Indiana winters.

Before I retried I used to own a fleet of diesel trucks, with anti-gel treatment we never had any issues until the ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURE was SUSTAINED for MORE THAN 24 HOURS at or below -10F.

I drive to North Carolina regularly in my daughter's diesel VW Jetta and average about 44 to 46mpg. We typically make it from NW Indiana to West Virginia before we stop for fuel because I don't like her to let the tank get below 1/4 full.

Thanks for the information. I am absolutely not an expert on diesel by any means, and did not realize that one could mitigate against gelling. I will have to do some research. I appreciate the info, was also not aware of Mercedes' other offerings. :)

the prius c is basically a yaris. For the additional cost I would have to drive 40,000 miles or buy 1000 gallons of gas to break even. It just doesn't even make financial sense.

If you buy diesel from Speedway and/or other major retailers the diesel is treated during the winter months to prevent gelling. So you really only have to treat it if you buy in bulk and store it in your own storage tanks.

I know the Prius is a political fashion accessory, but one of my partners put over 300,000 miles on a 1st gen. Prius with no major issues....I can't fault that. He has a 3d gen. Prius now.

Of course I drive a Silverado with a thirsty V8, so as I remind him, the best he can do is balance me out.
