So... how is it working out for you?

It was slower than I would have liked, but it kept up with the rest of the cars. If I had it to do over again, the largest gear would go on the axle and the smallest gear would go on the motor, right? What if the wheels wouldn't allow enough clearance to mount the largest gear on the axle?

That is right if your car did not reach top speed. If the axle was too big you could have added taller wheels if allowable in the rules, other than that go with the largest gear that would fit with the original wheels.

It sounds like you did good though.

You can think of it like this, the wheels are starting at 0 rpm, while you want the motor spinning faster. The motor may be able to turn the wheels with a 1:1 ratio if it has enough torque but it is not the most efficient.
