Do you believe in using corporal punishment for your children?

I've never hesitated to give a swat on the butt. I can only think of a couple times where it was a over the knee three or four swat spanking. Kids are getting older 3 and 4 and things like time out and the corner are starting to work.

The thing I do that I don't like is thumping them on the head. It was a corrective tool that my dad used. It worked well but man did I hate it. I always thought that I would never do it. When my 3 year old is poking his fork at his sister while sitting at the dinner table a quick flick sets him straight fast.

Another thing I do that I picked up from my dad and I think I've posted this before is I always talk to my kids after their punishment. I explain why they got in trouble. Most important of all I hug or hold them and tell them I love them.

But yea, you have to talk to them and explain why they got in trouble. The only problem is making them listen to you. What really hurts is when they say they hate you.

My nephew taught that lovely word to my kids last year. They learned fast how much I tolerate it. It's easy to forgive when they are young and do not realize the full meaning of words and the weight they can carry. When they get older . I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Cartoons taught my kids that word. Then the older two taught the younger two. All it takes is for me to reach for my belt buckle before they're screaming I'm sorry while running for their rooms. I've only had to use my belt once, threatened many times, but if they continue the way they have been the last week I'll be actually using it again. I don't want to. I hate having to punish them. I hate when I have to go that far. But I hate when they get out of line like this more.

True, spanking isn't the answer for every "infraction", and every effort should be made to avoid it. But the earlier a child is introduced to the corrective action the better.

If taken care of at an early age, chances are that it won't be needed when they get older. But (as with some of the kids on my bus) if it isn't done early on, there may not be much that will work - even spanking.

I believe that it may be too late for a few of my kids. I fear they may end up in jail. (Gang members)

I also agree that the child must be made aware of what he/she did wrong, and why they are being punished - with love.

I feel for you. Especially if they carry a red rag. I've been in that culture a few years myself. Not because I didn't get the disciple I should have, but because I thought I could make some real money. I was wrong. I seen how they end up. I didn't want to be like that. I can only imagine your worries as a parent, but I know the risks in that lifestyle. It's not too late to save them though. Good luck and wish you all the best.

These aren't actually MY kids. They are the kids who ride my bus. Most of them have moved here from Chicago after the projects were torn down.

There is a lot more gang activity (and a HUGE increase in crime) now. (Robberies, stabbings, shootings)

Kids need and want discipline. Of course, they do not understand it at the time, but it is emotionally disrupting for them to not know what is right and wrong.

Spanking is a useful tool that if handled with proper parenting needs to be done rarely. Much more important is follow up to your own direction. It takes a lot of time and effort, but if your children understand that you will only tell them once, you are doing them the proper service.

As BE noted, there is no replacement for two parents in the house on the same page.

She is a darling! I'm hoping she'll be instructing my grandsons on shooting when the time comes.
