    Loaded Shotgun in Car

I was talking to a friend the other night and somehow the subject of hunting and carrying shotguns came up. We have two very different views and only one of us is right. Out of respect for my friend, I did not want to argue, but I said I would run it by you guys. Please help me determine who is right.

He was telling me that in Indiana, you can have a shotgun in your car, but it has to be unloaded, in a case, and separated from shells. He says he knows this to be true because "he has a friend" that was arrested for having a loaded shotgun in his car. I think he was thinking more in terms of DNR Hunting Regulations and travelling to and from hunting sites.

I said that is nonsense and you can carry your shotgun, or any long gun, in your car any way you want, even loaded. It may or may not be smart or safe, but it is legal. I also said that as long as you are legally in possession of the gun, there is no permit or license required.

Obviously one of us is right and one of us is wrong. We are both convinced. Please let me know which. If I am wrong, I have to buy him some beer.

    He owes you beer ....
Lord, make me fast and accurate. Let my aim be true and my hand faster than those who would seek to destroy me. Grant me victory over my foes and those that wish to harm to me and mine. Let not my last thought be “If only I had my gun”; and Lord if today is truly the day that You call me home, let me die in a pile of brass.

I'm fairly certain he owes you a beer. I think keeping it unloaded in the trunk would only apply if he was driving over state lines and possibly on DNR property, I'm not entirely familiar with the hunting regulations. Personally I do keep my shotgun in the trunk unloaded, but I'm generally going to the range and have my handgun on my hip. Just my $0.02

Pretty sure the only States that would require it Unloded/Secure in trunk/ ammo someplace else, is Illinois and New York........other surrounding state will let you go with an Indiana LTC.........NOT 100% on that.

    Hey enjoy the beers!!!!

No, just a regular field style shotgun for hunting.

He's only right if the person does not possess an LTCH. So, both parties win? Who cares, they both get beer!

EDIT: Regular, plain jane shotgun? Totally legal and you get a free beer.

Even if it is a pistol grip shotgun he's good to go as long as he has a LTCH.
