Does anyone know, is there a comprehensive listing anywhere, of places in Indiana where we may NOT carry? I was out with my wife yesterday, and sat in the car while she ran into the credit union, as well as the post office, assuming, that carrying in those twp places was forbidden. It just got me to wondering where all it IS prohibited. Is there such a comprehensive list assembled anywhere?

Why would a credit union be off limits?

A good place to start would be the Indiana Code or http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/indiana.pdf

There are various threads around about things too, such as courtrooms and post offices.

I haven`t researched this, but I had thought that years ago, banks were on the forbidden list, which made sense to me at that time. As I`ve gotten older, I can`t see where there should be anywhere law-abiding citizens shouldn`t be ok to carry, but, this is why I`m asking.

Why would banks be forbidden? Is this akin to a legal spoonerism? Thinking a Federal Reserve Branch equates to all banks everywhere?

I believe there are prior threads; run a search. If not, I'll do a list tonight after yoga.

List for civilians and non-security personnel that I've gleaned from the IC:

Casino gambling floors (Casino must provide a secure location while gambling), Race Track Property, ANY USPS Property, Corp of Engineer facilities (including the Falls of the Ohio State Park in Jeffersonville), Hospitals that have a Secured wing for housing those under LEO control, (I believe) buildings housing inmates (i.e. - jails, court houses, etc...), school property (K-12 owned or rented for school functions) while outside your vehicle, a school bus (K-12), State Fair Grounds (during State Fair ONLY), and a long list of "Indiana government center campuses", reminded to mention Beyond Airport Security points... I'm also reminded to mention Licensed Daycare Centers (that are REQUIRED to be Licensed), Head Start, and Child Development Centers, which includes all properties owned / adjacent to the School buildings. (Thanks for the help, eldirector)

Banks, Credit Unions, College campus, and other businesses are not illegal for us to carry, but they may not allow us entry / ask us to leave + those working / attending several College campuses have in their handbooks that it is against their policy to poses (carry or otherwise) while on campus property.

Kirk - Please correct me if / where I'm mistaken, but I believe this is at least a good start!

Indiana's "school" definition includes K12, licensed daycare (not unlicensed daycare ministries), HeadStart, and other child development centers. Includes all buildings and property adjacent to the buildings that is owned/leased by the school.

Army Corp includes the entire property to the ACoE Boundary Line.

Airports beyond the Security Checkpoint should be added.

    Where's the bacon?
Years ago, maybe. Kirk could say better than I. However, I think it's more likely a mistaken carry-over from some other state. There are some that forbid carry in banks, in crowds (I think, not sure on this one,) at sporting events, bars, any restaurant that derives more than 50% of its revenue from the sale of alcohol, and probably a few other silly places with laws more akin to "a man may not fish from the back of a donkey on a Sunday while wearing a toboggan hat" than to anything that makes rational sense.

I'm not getting into the post office argument, other than to say that there is no law created by the Indiana Legislature that forbids carry in that location, by name. You may still have to deal with the feds, but there's no Indiana state law forbidding carry there.

Any building with a courtroom may forbid, but is not required to do so. State law does permit a political subdivision to allow guns there, and some do.

    Hope that helps!

    Blessings,
    Bill

First, let's all remember the 2 parallel railroad tracks, federal and state.

Federal: militree installations, the Post Office property, ACoE property, federal courthouses.

State: secure area of airports, casinos, riverboats, school property (some exemptions) (K-12), State Fair when Fair is in session, state property (Statehouse, State Museum, places like that), county courthouses if ordinance, jails, hospitals with jail floors.

Indiana law does not govern fed property. The Post Office is federal, don't carry in the Post Office.

Forgot to add State Historic Sites, which are now under the State Museum policies (were under DNR several years ago). So, places like the TC Steele Historic Site. I need to review the current IAC, because the section they reverence maye have changed or even been repealed.

Is it worth distinguishing IC, IAC, and Policy? Will certainly muddy the waters, but the penalties vary widely. Everything from a felony to a "tsk, tsk".

It also appears that individual offices of State agencies (unlike local government) can still adopt whatever policy they want. I hear that several State Unemployment Offices have posted "gun buster" signs, even though there is no IC or IAC that covers them.
