| Expert ![]() | "It Takes a Thief" was a good show. I'm not sure if it is still on or not. It shows you a lot of small things you can do to prevent thieves. Light is a very good deterrent.

-The more difficult you make it for an intruder, the less likely they are to stick around. It is them against time. The longer it takes them to do something, the less likely they are to stick around. -Keep all tools and anything that can be used by a would be intruder locked up. It's one thing to have your house broken into, it's another to have it done with your own tools. -Use a real 'charlie bar' to hold your sliding doors shut, not a cut off broom handle. -A safe is only effective if they can't get into it or take it. Bolt it down and take your keys with you. -Motion detectors and motion alarms are a good investment. -Every entry door needs a good lock and a dead bolt. The biggest part of this is routine. Always lock your door, regardless of the neighborhood. I'll see if I can find some of the episodes on YouTube.

There are a few Linux based packages that support a large number of web cams. These record only when the camera detects motion. This motion can also be scripted to SMS your phone (text message) etc. It's not easy though. Like most things Linux there's a lot of keyboard time getting the packages setup. Also the program I'm thinking of is optimized for IP based webcams, which is to say they have network ports rather than USB ports to connect them to the computer. This could be WiFi, or Cat-5 connections. I'll find some prices for common cameras, and links to the various software bits to make it work.
