If the OP is in Columbus as his profile says...

ONLINE FIREARM LICENSING (GUN PERMITS) IS NOW AVAILABLE - This service will be provided by the State of Indiana, but will require finalization with your local police department prior to completion. Follow this link to find out more information and instructions. Note: the information about the licensing is listed on the left-side of the the State of Indiana's website. (04-09-09)
eta: The text below seem to be a bit out of date (2002)

Handgun License

There are two types of handgun licenses available in the State of Indiana. A Hunting and Target license is a limited license and allows a person to lawfully transport a handgun to or from hunting or target shooting only. A Personal Protection or unlimited license allows a person to lawfully carry a handgun at anytime on his or her person or in a vehicle. Anyone living in the city limits of Columbus, Indiana must make their application for a handgun license through the Columbus Police Department.
To make application for either type of handgun license you need to fill out a preliminary information sheet, which allows us to run a criminal records check on you. These information sheets are available at our Records Division, Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. or at our Download Center. If applying for a Personal Protection License you must also submit a letter stating the reasons you are requesting the unlimited license. These letters should be addressed to the Chief of Police but should be submitted to the Records Division along with the completed information sheet. You will be requested to call our department approximately a week after submitting your paperwork to schedule an appointment to fill out the actual Application For Handgun License and to have your fingerprints taken.

I really think it makes it easier. You fill out the info on the state web site and the application is ready for you when you go to the PD. Just get finger printed and pay your money.

I was referring to the text, regarding writing a letter to the chief, that may or may not be outdated.

My county isn't on the online application list or I would have used it.

The "letter" to the chief may be outdated. Also some discussion if it is really legal to require one. Best case is to write,
"IC 35-47-1-8
"Proper reason"
Sec. 8. "Proper reason" means for the defense of oneself or the state of Indiana."

You might check with other members from Columbus to see if they had to go through all the run-around mentioned in the above post.

j/k.
Sorry...just poking fun at the "CCW" nomenclature. Indiana makes no distinction on method of carry. It's "LTCH" (License to Carry Handgun), so "concealed" is listed nowhere on that permit.
I'm not sayin'. I'm just sayin'.

Sorry I have just always heard it reffered to as a "CCW" or lifetime permit. Like I said, I am a Noob to owning a handgun.
