![]() | Does anyone know the actual code that prohibits carry in court houses, particularly County courthouses. I have always heard that, but can't seem to find the code. Also, if anyone knows a better way to search code than I am using, tips are appreciated.

Courthouses Firearms are prohibited in most (if not all) courts. The authority of courts to prohibit firearms within their buildings is multifold: • As indicated, local governments (counties, etc.), may regulate firearms “with respect to land, buildings, or other real property owned or managed by the local government” under Ind. Code §35-47-11-2, which would authorize a county, for example, to pass a local ordinance that prohibits firearms in county courthouses. • State law also authorizes local courts to “establish rules for their own government under, supplementary to, and not conflicting with the rules prescribed by the supreme court or any statute.” See IC 34-8-1-4. This would authorize a court to issue a local court rule that prohibits firearms. • In addition, local courts are also authorized to issue their own standing orders that regulate conduct in their courtrooms. This has resulted in several courts issuing standing orders prohibiting firearms in their courtrooms or on courthouse property.

Since now flashlights are banned. My one daughters came home from highschool freaked out because many of her road emergency items are banned and they are talking random searches. I am just afraid she will use her cold steel sharkie in class and get expelled. I think I am going to get her a e-tool shovel for her trunk. ![]()

Cite please, Dan? When was it that way? (not doubting you, just don't know how to look that up myself for reference) Also, if you have any info on why it was changed (that is, did some moron commit a crime for which everyone else is still being punished?) Thanks! Blessings, Bill

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | As I recall, it was 1994 that the folks in the statehouse decided to make it a felony to have a gun on school property (I was living out of state @ the time & discovered this when I moved back). Prior to that, it was not only not illegal to have a gun on school grounds, but I used to go groundhog hunting & shooting @ my school. I even got in trouble one time b/c a parent saw me move a pistol from my friends car to mine. The principal said I should make sure it's wrapped up in something next time. That was the 1st law that I remember, dealing with guns, since before I was born. After that, the IN Supreme Court decided they wanted all court rooms gun free, this was expanded to be all court HOUSES. Then, we got river boat casinos. They became no carry zones. Then the State Fair Board decided that the good people of IN couldn't be trusted wearing guns to the state fair. We are supposed to leave them in our cars, so they can be stolen (evidently they believe that the thief will use them more responsibly!). One can't go to many sporting events where carry isn't prohibited. Little by little, more employers are saying we can't carry, then we can't have them in our cars, then more & more businesses are putting the equivalent to the OSHA safety alerts for armed robbers (no guns signs), on their doors. Most recently, we lost the right to carry while participating in the political process of personally visiting our state legislators, or conducting business with the state. Oh, but now we can carry in State Parks (unless the US Army Corps of Engineers manages it). (My , whoopty doo, at least the parks didn't have metal detectors when carry wasn't allowed!)Oh, I just remembered the 1st law restricting guns; it was SBS. Some stupid kid committed a crime w/ a sawed off shotgun. Some legislator got it in their mind that if they make them illegal, that wouldn't happen again (forgot to tell Anthony Kyritsis). The next one was the 1994 law, above. While I'm not 100% about the chronology of the above, those are the law/rule changes I can think of & the order I believe they came about. Hope that helps. ![]() ![]() | +1 for Minuteman32! ![]() I also remember when you would see the rifle and shotguns hanging in the older students trucks as well as the teachers. They would go hunting right after school. Quote:
