![]() | Toronto Singer-Songwriter Killed in Coyote Attack A good reason to stay armed when in parks. 10/28/2009 Taylor Mitchell, a singer-songwriter of Toronto, Canada, died this morning from injuries received during a coyote attack yesterday while she was hiking the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Police responded to a 911 call at about 3:15 p.m. and arrived to find two coyotes still attacking Mitchell. While the police have not formally identified Mitchell, her publicist confirmed her identity in an email to the media. "[The victim] was airlifted to the QEII hospital in Halifax, where she died of her injuries early this morning," Sgt. Bridgit Leger of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. Mitchell suffered from bite wounds all over her body. She was believed to have been hiking alone. Officers said the coyotes continued to act aggressively when they approached the young woman. Sgt. Leger said an officer shot one of the coyotes when they arrived on scene, but both fled into the woods. "The trail has been closed and it is secure," Germaine LaMoine, a spokesman for the Cape Breton field unit for Parks Canada, said. "We're very concerned about public safety. That's foremost on our minds. We are keeping it closed until that second animal has been located and disposed of." Park staff is currently searching for the second, uninjured coyote. If found, the animal will be destroyed, and tests will be performed on the carcass for a possible explanation of the attack. Mitchell was on tour in the Maritimes. Her last show was at the Broadway Cafe in Sussex, N.B., on Oct. 24. |
