Very proper.

"Get the eff out!" multiple times...warning shot (even with the safety blunder), and then the real thing.

Sounds pretty textbook. I wouldn't have said a damn thing. Strange figure in my house at any time? Dead. NO QUESTION.

Interesting story to be sure. Although I seriously would reconsider opening fire on a "strange figure". You might be attending the funeral of someone you hadn't expected.

Question

One obvious question that I just must ask...... Why in the world didn't the wife call 911 before or even instead of calling her husband?!?!? :rolleyesedit:

If my husband were nearby, I'd probably call him first. He'd get there before the police would. 911 would make you stay on the line as well. So call the hubby then call 911.

I'm stunned that the husband was able to get home, get into his house, find his gun, and then go back and find the intruder. Was the intruder deaf? Did he not realize that someone else (besides him) was moving around the home and would probably find him? I'm glad to hear the family wasn't hurt, and I'm actually glad to see the BG didn't die... way too young for a stupid mistake like that.

And secondly... what happened to teaching journalists proper grammar???
Quote:
"Since the stairs were there ... my wife and baby were up there, and he could of ran upstairs," said Stevens.
This really is a pet peeve of mine. I usually ignore it because it's such a common mistake, but journalists are supposed to be good at grammar and spelling. The correct phrasing is "could've," a conjunction of "could" and "have." And if Mr. Stevens wrote down his quote for the reporter, it should have been followed by a [sic] instead. /sigh

Anywho.. I agree. Unless I thought I was in OMGimmediate danger, Lars would be my first call, too. It'd be something like, "There's someone in the house. I'm calling 911. Come home NOW. [click]"

My favorite was
Quote:
"I had my gun and I was pointing it at him," Stevens said. "And I was telling him, 'Get out of my house a bunch of times.'"
So, not only proper grammar, but doesn't know how to use quotation marks to correctly quote someone.

I guess it's possible that Stevens really did want the BG to get out a bunch of times.

Bigum1969 will become famous soon enough
Not to stir up the pot, but I think the reporter is correct on both counts. As a Journalism school grad, you are taught to write down exactly what is said. In the first instance, if the person says the words "could have" you would write them as such. You don't automatically fix grammar or shorten could have to could've.

Secondly, I believe that is the correct use of quotes.

Anyhow, it's not usually in my nature to defend journalists. If they don't mess up the grammer, they almost always miss the facts.

I could be wrong. It's been a long day.
