I am considering taking up the hobby of bladesmithing as long as my arthritis will allow. I am a huge fan of Forged In Fire, and love the different challenges they are given with different types of steel to make a blade. I realize I would have a lot to learn before attempting this, However I am wondering If any one here who makes blades have tried to use old Plane Irons? I think they would make interesting Damascus blades. If you are not familiar with them they are generally made of softer steel or iron with higher grade carbon steel Laminated to the last 1-2 inches of the blade depending on the size. Some older ones like two that I have say Cast Steel on them and are from the mid 1800's. At present I am not willing to part with any I have because I am still restoring hand planes. But just wondering if any one has tried this material? And how it worked out?
