The American Spectator (http://spectator.org/) held its annual Robert L. Bartley dinner last night at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, DC. The dinner included speeches from the Spectator’s President Alfred S. Regnery, it’s Editor-in-Chief R. Emmet Tyrell, and Republican Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana.
Pence rallied the crowd with a thoughtful address about the need to preserve the ideals of the American Revolution.:“According to our second President, the real American Revolution was a revolution of self reliance and independence, casting off dependency on the crown, in the hearts and minds of the American people. It was a rejection of the spirit of dependence in favor of a society of free and independent people.
“As Thomas Sowell wrote, ‘What the American Revolution did was give the common man a voice, a veto, elbow room, and a refuge from the rampaging presumptions of his “betters.”’ And, I submit, it is that revolution of independence and self reliance that liberal elites are seeking to overturn.‪ Barney Frank recently said, ‘We are trying on every front to increase the role of government.’ Not just the size but the role.”

I noticed a teaser article in the Indy Star online yesterday asking readers about their views concerning corporal punishment in schools. I emailed the reporter with my comments supporting corporal punishment and today had a phone interview with the reporter.

I gave my reasons for using corporal punishment in both my home as well as in the school system. The reporter was nice, didn't ask misleading questions or try to lead me down a certain path. The Star will be running this story in NEXT weeks Sunday Star.

I also learned that out of the 11 school districts in Marion Co. only 3 allowed corporal punishment and I live in one of them, go Franklin Twp!!!

Senate Democrats have cleared the way for a Saturday night vote to begin the healthcare debate, a Democratic aide said.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) has agreed to relent on his demand for Senate clerks to read aloud the 2,074-page bill and allow the chamber to take a critical test vote, said the aide. Reading the bill on the Senate floor was estimated to take as many as 30 hours or longer, raising the possibility of the Senate staying in session into next week.

The agreement to dispense with time-consuming procedural hurdles means that lawmakers will be able to catch flights back to their home states later in the evening on Saturday or early the next morning. This comes as welcome news for aides and other congressional workers who wrestled with the prospect of the Senate extending its session until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Indiana prison stops serving lunch three days a week Civil rights groups, lawmakers critical of program at Plainfield eliminating midday meal 3 days a week

By John Tuohy
john.tuohy@indystar.com
The inmates at Plainfield Correctional Facility can't be accused of getting a free lunch.
Or any lunch at all. At least on some days.
The medium security prison in Hendricks County has eliminated lunch on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays -- part of a pilot program that could go statewide.
http://www.in.gov/idoc/ (http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/%3Ca%20href=)" target="_blank">The Indiana Department of Correction insists it's not about saving money but what's in the best interest of prisoners. Officials say they have received few complaints since rolling out the changes last month.
But others, including civil rights organizations and lawmakers, are highly skeptical of any benefits -- and think it's potentially dangerous.
Because of tight budgets, a handful of other states have cut meals to save money. But Indiana prison officials said the driving force here was to give prisoners more classroom and recreational time.
"Serving meals is a time-consuming effort that takes hours," Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison said. "By eliminating one meal, we are able to operate our programs more efficiently."
Plainfield Correctional spokesman Kevin Mulroony said two square meals a day provide the same calories -- 2,500 -- as three meals. Breakfast and lunch are combined into what is being called "brunch" -- but is predominantly breakfast food served at 6 a.m. Dinner is served 10 hours later, at 4 p.m. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
Mulroony said the new schedule frees up weekends for education classes, religious services and family visits for the inmates, who often have busy schedules into the night.
But the Republican chairman of the state Senate corrections and criminal subcommittee said he can see few benefits in such a drastic change.
"We should treat our inmate population like human beings," said Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel. "Denying food or cutting back on meals is beneath the dignity of the state of Indiana and is not in sync with our Hoosier values. It is my hope that the corrections officials will come before us and reassure us that they are treating the prisoners in a humane way."
State Rep. Bill Crawford, D-Indianapolis, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said he doubts that the prisoners are still getting their recommended calories.
"I'd like to see an accounting of that," Crawford said.
A review of four weeks of menus reveals that the prisoners are getting shortchanged a main-course item each Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
For example, during the first week of the pilot program, the four lunch main courses were goulash, bologna, taco meat and sloppy Joes. At weekend brunch, they were bologna, peanut butter, and oatmeal and sausage. Dinners remained generally the same -- one main course.
Mulroony acknowledged that traditional lunch offerings such as chicken quarters and meat with macaroni and cheese were missing at brunch. But he said the heavier foods aren't included because they are served just as early as breakfast.
"You try to serve more breakfast-type items because the offenders are still eating at 6 in the morning," he said.
Although prison officials said they were not trying to cut expenses when they made the move, the private contractor that handles food service for prisons has had trouble staying within its promised budget since landing the $258 million, 10-year deal in 2005.
At the time, Aramark boasted that it would save the state $11 million and cut the average cost of a meal from $1.41 to 99 cents. But since then, it has exceeded its projected annual budget increase of 6 percent.
The company told the committee that rising gas prices had driven up the cost of food and that the rising prison population was increasing its expenses.
The DOC's food service allocation jumped from $28.9 million for 2009 to $36 million for 2010 and to $40 million for 2011, according to the House Ways and Means Committee.
Aramark was provided a list of written questions by The Indianapolis Star but referred all inquiries about the program to the DOC.
Whatever the reason for cutting meals, advocates for inmates' rights think it is dangerous to tinker with a prisoner's food.
Elizabeth Alexander, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's National Prison Project, said cutting lunch creates "a tremendous gap between meals."
"Making prisoners go hungry for long periods is not the way to solve anything," she said. "Food is not the place to make cuts, especially since it is such a small percentage of a prison's budget."
Food service accounts for about 5 percent of DOC's $726 million budget in 2010.
Skipping meals can be dangerous for certain inmates, such as those with diabetes and hepatitis. But Mulroony said 33 inmates with special needs still receive regular lunches on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
He said there have been few complaints from the 1,600 inmates about the change.
Gil Holmes, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, said the organization was aware of the change but had not received any complaints from prisoners.
Until it does, the ACLU of Indiana probably won't take any action, Holmes said.
The DOC said the pilot program would last an indefinite length of time and is being reviewed to determine other prisons where it might work. Eventually, all 30 prisons in the system could switch to the new eating schedule, Garrison said.
And, DOC officials said, inmates can always get chips, cookies and Ramen noodles in the commissary to tide them over between meals. Prisoners have to pay for those.
"You'd be amazed at what prisoners can do with a bag of Ramen," Mulroony said. "It's good as anything served in a restaurant."

We have seen a real rise in anti free speech at American Universities over the last few years if that speech comes from the right. Obviously this isn't a good sign for our future. It is this same spirit of PC that allowed the Ft. Hood shooter to continue unchallenged.

---Quote---
PRINCETON — Yesterday’s scheduled speech by controversial author and human rights activist Nonie Darwish at Princeton University was canceled after the student groups sponsoring the event withdrew their support.

Darwish, founder of Arabs for Israel and Former Muslims United, has written critically of radical Islam, and many opponents argue her views extend to the religion overall. Her speeches have been met with protests on several other college campuses.

On Tuesday, Tigers For Israel and the American Whig-Cliosophic Society withdrew their sponsorship.

“She’s not anti-Islam. She makes very clear the distinction between radical Islam as an institution and the religion of Islam,” said sophomore Rafael Grinberg, co-vice president of TFI. He opposed the decision and attempted to bring Darwish to campus after the groups withdrew, though her speech was canceled.

Robert Day, a senior and the publisher of Princeton’s conservative magazine the Tory, which offered to sponsor the event instead, said that Darwish’s opinions were being “unduly silenced.”

“This is not an attempt to silence her,” said junior Addie Lerner, TFI president. “We did not want to associate ourselves as her sponsor because we didn’t want it to seem like we believe in her views on Islam in their entirety.”

When students raised concerns about Darwish’s views to the university’s Muslim Chaplain, Imam Sohaib Sultan, he passed along their thoughts — and a selection of Darwish’s more incendiary quotes — to Rabbi Julie Roth, the executive director of Princeton’s Center for Jewish Life, and TFI, which later decided to drop its support.

“Any notion of Islamic intimidation is just ridiculous,” said Sultan, who said he reached out to raise awareness of the potential divisions Darwish’s speech could create on campus. “I never once pressured anyone to withdraw support from this event.”

Ben Weisman, a junior and Whig-Clio’s president, said that the group opposed Darwish’s views.

“Our decision to rescind our co-sponsorship was not based on pressure from any groups,” he said. “We fully understood the controversial and offensive nature of her views.

“Because TFI initially indicated through their invitation that they not only consider her views relevant enough in the mainstream discourse to be presented at Princeton, but also that there was possible support for these ideas, Whig-Clio deemed it worthwhile to bring this controversial figure to Whig Hall so that her views could be understood and challenged.

“After TFI pulled out, that justification sort of evaporated,” Weisman said.

Darwish was left without a venue because university policy requires events to be sponsored by student groups, Grinberg said.

“I decided though both groups were withdrawing, it was even more important to have her speak because I still think she’d have a very positive impact, and because at this point it’s important to show that at least for me, I’m not afraid of what other people think,” said Grinberg, who suggested that TFI was concerned about its public image.

The Tory offered to sponsor the speech, but it was canceled because Grinberg ran out of time to arrange for university security guards for Darwish after the initial groups withdrew, he said.

“The fact that someone holds such critical views of a particular religious faith should never justify the silencing of her opinion,” Day said. “(The Tory) believed this to be particularly important for a university that is committed to the promotion of open, intellectual discourse.”

University officials did not return phone calls on the matter.

TFI stands firm in its decision to rescind sponsorship. “This wasn’t anything we were pressured into. This was a long, thought-out decision,” Lerner said. “We’re standing up for what we believe in. We don’t believe in anti-Islam rhetoric.”

More good news from our beloved administration........

Now 'all Guns' must be listed

on your next (2010) tax return!

As if we didn't have enough to get upset about!
If you have a gun, I hope it isn't registered!

Senate Bill SB-2099 will require us to put on our 2009 1040 federal tax form all guns that you have or own. It will require fingerprints and a tax of $50 per gun.

This bill was introduced on Feb... 24, 2009, by the Omama staff.. BUT . . this bill will only become public knowledge 30 days after the new law becomes effective ! This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. This means that the Finance Committee has passed this without the Senate voting on it at all. Trust Obama ? ..... you must be kidding !

The full text of the IRS amendment is on the U.S. Senate homepage,U.S. Senate You know who to call; I strongly suggest you do. Please send a copy of this e-mail to every gun owner you know.

Text of H.R.45 as Introduced in House: Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 - U.S.... OpenCongress <_http://www.s%20%20enate.gov/%3E_ (http://www.s%20%20enate.gov/%3E)> Obama's Congress is now starting on the firearms confiscation bill. If it passes, gun owners will become criminals if you don't fully comply.
<_http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h45/text_ (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h45/text)>
It has begun . . . Whatever Obama's secret Master Plan is....this is just the 'tip of the iceberg!'

Very Important for you to be aware of another new bill HR 45 introduced into the House. This is the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sale Act of 2009..|

Even gun shop owners didn't know about this because the government is trying to fly it under the radar as a 'minor' IRS revision, and, as usuual, the 'political' lawmakers did not read this bill before signing and approving it !

To find out about this - go to any government website and type in HR 45 or Google HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sales Act of 2009. You will get all the information.

Basically this would make it illegal to own a firearm - any rifle with a clip or ANY pistol unless:

-It is registered -You are fingerprinted -You supply a current Driver's License -You supply your Social Security # -You will submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any time of their choosing -Each update - change of ownership through private or public sale must be reported and costs $25 - Failure to do so you automatically lose the right to own a firearm and are subject up to a year in jail. -There is a child provision clause on page 16 section 305 stating a child-access provision. Gun must be locked and inaccessible to any child under 18. -They would have the right to come and inspect that you are storing your gun safely away from accessibility to children and fine is punishable for up to 5 yrs. in prison.

If you think this is a joke - go to the website and take your pick of many opt- ions to read this. It is long and lengthy. But, more and more people are becoming aware of this. Pass the word along. Any hunters in your family pass this along.|

This is just a "termite" approach to complete confiscation of guns and disarming of our society to the point we have no defense - chip away a little here and there until the goal is accomplished before anyone realizes it.

This is one to act on whether you own a gun or not..

*Gen. Paul Vallely: Islamists Infiltrating U.S. Military*

Thursday, November 19, 2009 8:31 PM

*By:* Jim Meyers

U.S. Army Gen. Paul E. Vallely tells Newsmax that the Obama administration made a "terrible decision" in planning to move terror suspects from Guantanamo Bay to New York City for trial.
He also declared that the administration's refusal to call the Fort Hood shooter a terrorist is "absolutely ridiculous," warned that radical Islamists have infiltrated the Defense Department and other agencies — and said the U.S. needs to take down "the center of terror" — Iran.

Maj. Gen. Vallely retired from the Army in 1993 as Deputy Commanding General, Pacific, and was a senior military analyst for Fox News. He is the co-author of the book "Endgame: The Blueprint for Victory in the War on Terror," and chairman of the Military Committee at the Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C.
Regarding what he calls the Obama administration's "terrible decision" to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other terror suspects in New York, Gen. Vallely told Newsmax.TV's Kathleen Walter:

"I've been to Guantanamo Bay three times. It is the perfect location to keep radical Islamist terrorists for two reasons: Number one, to be able to secure them in a facility, and two, to do the proper interrogation that needs to be done for these individuals.
"I think it needs to be kept open and also available for any of these radical Islamists that we capture anywhere, whether it's in this country or overseas. They're a threat to the United States, so I think it's a bad decision. It's going to be a show, a theater. The people in New York should absolutely rebel against this happening there. It should be done by a military tribunal."
Walter asked the general about the refusal of President Obama and other administration officials to call accused Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan a terrorist.
"It's absolutely ridiculous. It's like they're in a closet all by themselves in Washington and don't realize what radical Islam is all about," Vallely declared.
"It was the same thing in the Bush administration — senior military people, senior political appointees, elected officials, members of Congress not realizing what the enemy is here and what their ambitions and goals are.
"This definitely was a terrorist attack. This was a radicalized Islamist American."
Walter asked who is to blame for what happened at Fort Hood.
"I think it is the state of mind of our leadership, not only the politicians but at the senior military level, to be political correct," Vallely responded.
"We have hundreds that are being radicalized in the mosques in the United States alone. I said when this happened at Fort Hood, believe me, this will track back to a mosque. And it has tracked back to the mosque outside Washington D.C. So political correctness has gone just completely astray."
Vallely said he "absolutely agrees" with Sarah Palin's assertion that accused shooter Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, should have been profiled.
"I've always been for profiling and profiling can be a very positive thing," Vallely stated. "It's part of the vetting process ... This is a case where political correctness overcame proper vetting."
Vetting is necessary, Vallely said, because "we know we've been infiltrated. We had a situation with a soldier with the 101st Airborne who threw a grenade. We've had many instances of Islamic infiltration into our system even at the Department of Defense level.
"We've been infiltrated not only at the department of Defense but also the State Department and other agencies. And this is the plan of the radical Islamists. It's a slow takeover, a slow movement to what we call the Caliphate, Sharia law."
Turning to Afghanistan, Vallely told Newsmax that Obama "really doesn't know what to do and the people around him don't know what to do, so they're hesitating whether to commit 40,000 troops that the general over there has requested.
"But on the other hand the strategy in my opinion hasn't been right for a long time. This is an unconventional war and it should be fought unconventionally. We should have learned from Vietnam. There's a way of taking down these radical Islamists. You can do it unconventionally. So I'm not convinced that putting in more troops is going to achieve victory over there."
Unconventional strategy involves "covert operations, taking out the leadership, penetrating into their lairs where they train, and destroying them," Vallely said.
"But I think the Obama administration has got to at least be decisive on where they are going because they're the executive branch of the government. He's the commander in chief.
"Now we have reports that the morale of the troops, the morale of the leaders, is going down because it's like sitting on a fence: Are we going to go in and win this war? Is it going to be victory? Or do we continue to nation build, which is not the job of the army in the first place as far as I'm concerned.
"Let's go to battle, let's win and let's get our troops back home."
Vallely said the U.S. needs to deal with the fact that Iran is delivering explosives and weapons to jihadists in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Middle East.
"You've got to go where radical Islam is funded, how it's supported, how it's fed, how it's armed. And the center of terror in the world today is Tehran. So unless we're willing to take the regime down in Tehran, it's going to continue to infect the entire Middle East.
"You have to take down these national sponsors of international terrorism."

*L.A. Times Columnist Uncritically Quoted Star of Latest ACORN Video (http://patterico.com/2009/11/19/l-a-times-columnist-uncritically-quoted-star-of-latest-acorn-video/)*

Filed under: Dog Trainer (http://patterico.com/category/dog-trainer/), General (http://patterico.com/category/general/) — Patterico @ 6:49 pm

Image: http://patterico.com/files/2009/11/Rainey-EggFace.jpg (http://patterico.com/files/2009/11/Rainey-EggFace.jpg)
Above: James Carville shows James Rainey his future.
In September, L.A. Times columnist James Rainey wrote a *column* (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-on-the-media23-2009sep23,0,3166610,full.column) in which he uncritically quoted ACORN worker Lavelle Stewart suggesting that she had turned Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe out of her office:[V]isits to other ACORN offices have gone almost entirely unmentioned. *Lavelle Stewart*, a fair-housing coordinator in the group’s Los Angeles office, told me this week that she tried to get the “prostitute,” who claimed she had been beaten by her pimp, to go to a women’s center.
“The fact she was not taking the help I offered her made me think something was not right,” Stewart said. *“It raised a red flag.”*

Media Matters gloated: *LA Times report further undermines ACORN videographers’ credibility* (http://mediamatters.org/research/200909240037).
I wasn’t so sure — and I *publicly declared* (http://patterico.com/2009/10/25/things-that-make-you-go-hmmmmmmmmm/) that Rainey had likely been suckered and would end up with egg on his face. I wrote Rainey and asked him:1) Did you contact Breitbart, Giles, or O’Keefe before writing your column, to ask them about what Stewart said?
2) If, by chance, you turn out to have been wrong about ACORN in L.A. — if it turns out that ACORN in L.A. tried to help Giles and O’Keefe with their purported underage prostitution ring — will you write another column acknowledging that?

When Rainey failed to respond, I contacted Breitbart (he’s very easy to reach) and asked him. Breitbart confirmed that Rainey *hadn’t bothered to contact Breitbart* (http://patterico.com/2009/10/30/james-rainey-regurgitating-one-sided-claims-is-bad-journalism-except-when-i-do-it/) — or *Giles or O’Keefe* (http://patterico.com/2009/10/30/what-would-breitbart-have-said-to-rainey/) — to ask their side of the story. I asked Breitbart what he would have told Rainey about Lavelle Stewart’s denials, and Breitbart said he would have told Rainey:As an empathetic being, I urge you to think twice before accepting the word of an ACORN employee for anything. Because every journalist who has done so has ended up with egg on his or her face.

It’s too bad Rainey never received that warning. Because guess who is the star of Giles and O’Keefe’s latest ACORN video?

Quotable:I mean, I think you have to hook up with someone who is on that international sex business level. . . . 14 and 15 year-olds been traveling overseas for years. that’s not something that’s brand new. You know what I mean? . . . I could do research for you I could find out what we can do — how to get you in that door. . . There are ways, people do it all the time.

(Breitbart tells me that Rainey is now claiming he did try to contact Breitbart. Breitbart told me he can find no evidence of the attempted contact. Breitbart told me that tonight. It was very easy to contact Breitbart, as it always is.)
The best part: Rainey *recently criticized Fox News for uncritically accepting only one side of the story* (http://patterico.com/2009/10/30/james-rainey-regurgitating-one-sided-claims-is-bad-journalism-except-when-i-do-it/). I mean, there are so many levels to the irony, you need an elevator to visit them all.
I now publicly ask the question Rainey would not answer privately: having written a misleading column that falsely suggested that ACORN in L.A. was clean — and that Giles and O’Keefe were dishonest — *is James Rainey now going to write a new column and correct the record?*
P.S. Time to confess. Good guesses are good. *Certainty is better.* It’s easy to be Karnak when you already know the future. See what I mean?

“RAINEY = GALE GORDON” UPDATE: Tim Cavanaugh has personally dealt with Rainey. So when Cavanaugh *describes* (http://reason.com/blog/2009/11/19/jim-rainey-brings-the-always-u) Rainey as a humorless prototype of *Gale Gordon* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gale_Gordon) . . . he knows whereof he speaks.

Above: James Carville shows James Rainey his future.
In September, L.A. Times columnist James Rainey wrote a column in which he uncritically quoted ACORN worker Lavelle Stewart suggesting that she had turned Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe out of her office:
[V]isits to other ACORN offices have gone almost entirely unmentioned. Lavelle Stewart, a fair-housing coordinator in the group’s Los Angeles office, told me this week that she tried to get the “prostitute,” who claimed she had been beaten by her pimp, to go to a women’s center.
“The fact she was not taking the help I offered her made me think something was not right,” Stewart said. “It raised a red flag.”

Media Matters gloated: LA Times report further undermines ACORN videographers’ credibility.
I wasn’t so sure — and I publicly declared that Rainey had likely been suckered and would end up with egg on his face. I wrote Rainey and asked him:
1) Did you contact Breitbart, Giles, or O’Keefe before writing your column, to ask them about what Stewart said?
2) If, by chance, you turn out to have been wrong about ACORN in L.A. — if it turns out that ACORN in L.A. tried to help Giles and O’Keefe with their purported underage prostitution ring — will you write another column acknowledging that?

When Rainey failed to respond, I contacted Breitbart (he’s very easy to reach) and asked him. Breitbart confirmed that Rainey hadn’t bothered to contact Breitbart — or Giles or O’Keefe — to ask their side of the story. I asked Breitbart what he would have told Rainey about Lavelle Stewart’s denials, and Breitbart said he would have told Rainey:
As an empathetic being, I urge you to think twice before accepting the word of an ACORN employee for anything. Because every journalist who has done so has ended up with egg on his or her face.

It’s too bad Rainey never received that warning. Because guess who is the star of Giles and O’Keefe’s latest ACORN video?
Just like the original 2,032-page, government-run health care plan from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) massive, 2,074-page bill would levy a new “abortion premium” fee on Americans in the government-run plan.
Beginning on line 7, p. 118, section 1303 under “Voluntary Choice of Coverage of Abortion Services” the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run health plan. Leader Reid’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions (line 13, p. 120).
What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run health plan. It’s right there beginning on line 11, page 122, section 1303, under “Actuarial Value of Optional Service Coverage.” The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account – _and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services_.
Section 1303(a)(2)(C) describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run health plan and for those who are given an affordability credit to purchase insurance coverage that includes abortion through the Exchange. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.
A majority of Americans believe (http://republicanleader.house.gov/Components/Redirect/r.aspx?ID=34288-3477658) that health care plans should not be mandated to provide elective abortion coverage, and a majority of Americans do not believe government health care plans should include abortion coverage. Currently, federal appropriations bills include language known as the Hyde Amendment that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, while another provision, known as the Smith Amendment, prohibits federal funding of abortion under the federal employees’ health benefits plan.
Leader Reid’s 2,074-page health care monstrosity is an affront to the American people and drastically moves away from current policy. The National Right to Life Committee has called the Reid abortion language “completely unacceptable (http://www.nrlc.org/AHC/Release111809.html).” The American people deserve more from their government than being forced to pay for abortion. The pro-life Stupak/Pitts amendment passed the House by a vote of 240 to 194 (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll884.xml), enjoying the overwhelming support of 176 Republicans and 64 Democrats. The Stupak/Pitts Amendment codifies current law by prohibiting federal funding of elective abortions under any government-run plan or plans available under the Exchange. The Reid plan ignores the will of a bipartisan majority of the House, and indeed the American people, by rejecting this bipartisan amendment.
Health care reform should not be used as an opportunity to use federal funds to pay for elective abortions. Health reform should be an opportunity to protect human life – not end it – and the American people agree. House Republicans have offered a common-sense, responsible solution that would reduce health care costs and expand access while protecting the dignity of all human life. The Republican plan, available at HealthCare.GOP.gov (http://republicanleader.house.gov/Components/Redirect/r.aspx?ID=34289-3477658), would codify the Hyde Amendment and prohibit all authorized and appropriated federal funds from being used to pay for abortion. And _under the Republican plan, any health plan that includes abortion coverage may not receive federal funds_.

*Washington (CNN)* - With less than a year to go until crucial mid-term contests, the Republican National Committee says they've raised what they call an off-election year record of money last month.
The RNC reports Thursday morning that they raked in $8.79 million in October, with $11.2 million cash on hand and no debt. The RNC says it has now topped one million active donors and that as of November 11, it has registered a record 305,000 new contributors this year.
The $8.79 million is up slightly from the $8.74 million the RNC says they raised in September. The $11.2 million in the bank is down nearly $8 million from the start of October, which reflects the large amounts of money the RNC spent last month to help Republican candidates in this November's contests. Republican gubernatorial candidates in New Jersey and Virginia both won, grabbing back two seats held by Democrats.

"I am extremely pleased that the Republican National Committee continues to show solid fundraising numbers, and we are grateful to the countless Americans who have contributed to our Party. The elections in Virginia and New Jersey clearly showed the American people oppose bigger government, reckless federal spending, and higher taxes, and this enthusiasm for common-sense Republican principles is strongly resonating with our generous and motivated donors," said RNC Chairman Michael Steele in a statement.
"Thanks to our many contributors, the RNC is on solid financial footing as we continue build an organization to support our candidates and state parties in the election of 2010 and beyond."
The RNC's counterpart, the Democratic National Committee, has not yet released its October numbers. The DNC reported that they raised just over $8 million in September.

I find this odd sort of. Most people I know are not sending a dime to the RNC.
I have sent their solicitations back to them with this written on them, "I'll send my money to the candidates of my choosing and I won't let you fund RINOs with my money" written on them.

Holder targets racial profiling in Detroit speech

Speech offers chance to discuss such issues as racial profiling

ORALANDAR BRAND-WILLIAMS
The Detroit NewsDetroit -- U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told a crowd of law enforcement, and community and Muslim leaders Thursday the U.S. Justice Department "is again open for business."
"I can assure you under my leadership the Department of Justice will enforce all of our nation's laws with equal conviction," Holder declared, saying that under the Obama administration, the department will return to its "traditional" role of ensuring civil rights.
Holder, the nation's first African-American attorney general, also said he ordered an internal review of law enforcement data within the U.S. Justice Department to study the issue of racial profiling.
"Racial profiling is simply not good law enforcement," said Holder, who told the crowd that he was racially profiled in the 1970s as a college student.
Holder also touched on other hot-button issues, saying the Justice Department is committed to fighting terrorism. But, said Holder, he also is committed to "ensure the fair application of our nation's laws and constitutional protections, and there is no contradiction between the two."
The speech came amid heightened sensitivities in the Muslim community, following the fatal shooting last month of Detroit Imam Luqman Abdullah by FBI agents and the Fort Hood, Texas, shootings that killed 13 people and wounded 29. The Fort Hood shootings rocked the nation and had Muslims bracing for a backlash.
An Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, was charged in the attack, and agents are probing his alleged contacts with a radical imam before the shootings.
Indeed, Holder said he has heard from Muslim- and Arab-Americans who said they feel uneasy about their relationship with the U.S. government.
"They feel isolated and discriminated against by law enforcement," Holder said. "Some of them have told me that they feel denied the full rights of citizenship."
Holder made his remarks during the first awards banquet for ALPACT, the Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust. The organization is a collaboration of federal, state and local law enforcement, as well as civil rights and community groups.
Arab-American and Muslim leaders said they welcomed the speech, calling it an opportunity to clear the air.
Imad Hamad, the Midwest regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, called the Detroit event a "golden opportunity" to learn how the Justice Department under President Barack Obama will differ from that of his predecessor, George W. Bush.
Hamad said while Holder was "on target" with his speech, the real test of how the Justice Department will protect the civil liberties of Arab-Americans and Muslims is yet to come.
"He is setting the tone for the nation and all law enforcement, and that is very important," Hamad said. "He managed to define the line between the new administration and the Bush administration.
"The ultimate test ... is the future."
Hamad said local leaders sought a private meeting with Holder, but his schedule wouldn't allow it.
The banquet also honored the Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit Branch NAACP; the late Paul Sorce, a former FBI-Detroit special agent killed in the line of duty; and Barrie Schwartz, a community volunteer.

What backlash? Everyone is afraid to look at a Muslim for fear of being labeled a "Hater". Makes it much easier for the next attack to take place though.
