A greyhound racing track is going under in Wisconsin. I would love to adopt one of the 900 dogs that need homes, but we already have a mini dachshund. But, there is an old man down the street who covets our Meg. So here is the question that will tip the scale. Can a retired racing greyhound be trained to hunt? They were breed for hunting, but it doesn't seem as if anyone uses them for that purpose anymore. I've tried googling for an answer, but nothing I can find says anything about it.

My family has 60 or so acres down in Martin County. Most of it is soy/corn fields, but there are a little bit of woods around it. I've tried to learn where they bed and how they move, seen TONS of tracks and "sign", but rarely many deer, a few does here and there, but nothing I can ever get close to during the day.

I started look around for scrapes and rubs and ran across this:

Problem is, we just never see the bucks moving during legal hours. My cousin that lives on the property has seen a good size buck, but only late at night in his headlights.

Maybe I'll get lucky one of these days...

Off to a rough start

So I spent the last two days in the woods on my first deer hunting trip. You'll notice I have no pictures to post as I didn't see any deer in the woods. I did have a few events to share:

- What is with all the shooting? I heard guys popping six or seven shots off in a row. Isn't the deer long gone at that point?

- As I was driving out to the woods at 5am a four-point buck ran out in front of my truck as I was traveling at about 60mph. I hit the brakes and the ABS kicked in. I quickly realized that we were going to hit him and tried to swerve, unfortunately he had the same idea. We ended up clipping him at about 20 mph. The only damage to my truck was a three inch scrape and some fur. I never saw the buck again so I don't know what the damage was on his end.

- I believe someone may have been thinking of stealing my stuff out of my truck bed. I had returned to the truck to get out of the rain when an SUV slowly drove past on the road behind me. My windows were fogged up so I know he couldn't see me in there, just the equipment in the truck bed. After passing, he then sped back up to normal speed. About twenty minutes later militarypol21 loaded his stuff up and we were about to leave when another truck pulled up next to us. When we returned about an hour later the truck was gone, so obviously not hunters. Could have been nothing though...

Anyway, any other hunters get off to a rough start this season?

Yellowwood Questions

* Does anyone else deer hunt Dubois Ridge in Yellowwood?

* Anyone know why people keep firing off shot after shot after shot _ALL DAY LONG_, I know its also squirrel season but after 15 shots the thing is either dead or long gone?

* Anyone else hear the blow horn yesterday between 4pm and nightfall?

* Anyone know of any construction that is going on just to the East of Dubois Ridge (Possibly road construction... I could hear trucks backing up and a lot of banging while sitting in the stand but never drove that way to see what it was)

Thanks :ingo:

If this needs moved mods please feel free.

I'm looking for others to share their "to die for" deer/venison recipes. I plan to make some jerky tomorrow and stew in the crock pot. There are tons of online recipes and it's hard to pick just one. So what better way then to ask fellow hunters and forum members for their advise (my trust falls on you guys for the best of the best) I also have some ground in the freezer that i may do some chili with but haven't decided.

I also hunt other game, rabbit & squirrel but please add any wild game recipe you'd like, I'm sure it will benifit others in their search or in trying something new.

Thanks guys
