New knife: Boker/Jim Burke Mini Resurrection

Nothing MINI about this knife!

Long story short, this is also a big +1 for Boker!

I had a Boker Gemeni that kept giving me problems with the liner lock not locking the blade open. A tap to the back side, or any side pressure, would close the blade........ on what ever was in the way. Once it was my pinky finger. Returned once, new knife had same problem after a period of time. This time I called Boker and asked to exchange for something different. They told me to put my top choices for exchange in a letter, and send it in. Less than 2 weeks later this arrived in my mail box:

Image: http://www.joink.com/homes/users/cooke/misc/boker2.jpg

This knife is a heavy SOB!! Right out of the box the first thing it reminded me of was Tyler's big Zero Tolerance knife, not as nice, not as expensive, but just as much heft! It weights almost 8 oz, has a blade length of 3.75", and a OAL of 8.75". 440C blade material. It has G10 sides, and a THICK 5/32" blade. At first I was worried it was to big, but like the ZT, it really does disappear in your pocket. From my knife experience, this thing is scary sharp. My scary sharp probably isnt the same as a lot of guys scary sharp, but I couldnt believe how sharp it was out of the box. It will shave my arm baby butt smooth..... well, close anyway ;) It shaves paper like a champ and just keeps going.

So far I like it, Boker gave it to me with no upgrade fee, which I offered to pay. Hopefully over time it will keep living up to how much I currently like it.

BIG blades FTW! :rockwoot:

I've been carrying my new knife for about 10 days now. I ordered a ZT 0350 folder and it will replace my Kershaw Blurr as my EDC.
The ZT has a solid little 3.35" S30V blade that locks tight and opens fast.
It's been slicing anything I won't get in trouble for destroying.:D So far, no need for band-aids yet, either.

I just needed to rave a little about my newest constant-carry-companion.

Would a folding knife be considered concealed if it was affixed to your pants pocket using the clip? I'm thinking blade length might be relevant and also if the blade is covered by a shirt of course. I have read articles about police citing people with knives that were partially serrated since they had a more "serious" look about them. It makes me think of public opinion being swayed about a certain gun because of its looks (AR-16) while ignoring other guns that fire the same round but look more like a hunting rifle.

How I Build a Knife.

there are many ways, many tools, and many "ideas". this is how i make a typical fixed blade knife.

jclarke had contacted me to make him a knife. he really, really likes his Waldon styled knife, so we went from there. the knife is similiar to a Kabar, i suppose. lord knows how i feel about Kabar! :) ... we worked on some modifications... to make the knife better, IMO.... and came to settle on the mock up you see in the first few pictures.

a stick of 154cm. i was going to use D2 but some mystery person sent this to me! much more like i wanted to use!
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2110.jpg

lay out.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2111.jpg

drill out the profile. yes, i have two bandsaws. yes, i could saw the entire profile. but for me, this is how i like to do it.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2112.jpg

friction cut.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2113.jpg

off to the grinder.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2114.jpg

Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2115.jpg

grindin! shutter speed on the camera makes the belt look still...... but it was humming along at about 3400rpms....... way to fast for making knives!! hahaha!!
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2116.jpg

Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2117.jpg

i did the handle first to give me something more comfortable to hang on to.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2118.jpg

profile done.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2119.jpg

time for the thumb serrations! dremel to the rescue!!!!! ah, ****. broke it on the first one! THIS is where knife making gets interesting! back to old school. chainsaw file.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2121.jpg

Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2123.jpg

looking close. i leave extra material all over the knife, because after heat treat, you grind some more off.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2124.jpg

laying out the corby bolt holes.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2125.jpg

i drill extra holes for a list of reasons. for weight saving, for balance, for epoxy hold, and a few others. i did it on THIS knife for the epoxy hold.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2126.jpg

the result, before heat treating (which i out source to professional heat treaters because it is the MOST important part of making a knife). turned out great. thumb grooves are perfect, and size is good.
Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2128.jpg

Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2129.jpg

Image: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/marjoecassel/101_2127.jpg

i will update this thread, as work progresses. it is now ready for heat treat. you can grind the bevels before heat treat. some do, some don't. i used to do it before HT, but now i don't. its all personal prefence. you can also layout your scales, and drill them to fit. that way while your knife is away being treated, you can work the scales. again, i don't do it that way, but some do.

time to find some spare change in the couch and send this dog in to HT!

What do you guys think of all the fancy new blade materials the knife companies present to the buying public? It seems that there is a new flavor every month..like FT-130VG, or 456A-dd8...it is almost amusing (those were made up by the way).

Is there really that much of a difference between these materials?

for most it will be something which involves your parents, or grandparents, or another family member.... here is mine:

i was probly around 8-9 years old. at that age i was outside, playing superhero or swordfight or riding my bike or something everyday. we didn't have alot of room, but we owned a lot across the road with some large trees and such to play around.....

well, dad and mom thought that for my birthday i would enjoy the SAK that i had been BEGGING for for months. so it came to be, that i got my first SAK on my birthday. i loved it. bright red, sharp as could be, and a toothpick! too cool!

fifteen minutes later i was in the house getting the blood cleaned up...... they never took that knife from me either. now the slingshot... that was another story.

Let me start by saying that I blame Tyler and many of the other knife junkies here (I mean that with the utmost respect) for my current fixation with knives. I've found that like firearms:

1) I can't seem to buy just one that fits most of my needs
2) That I am justifying (at least in my own head) why I need a few more
3) You know you're in trouble when you start to think about what you want to buy next and develop a list (and then you write the list down!)
4) That I don't know much about them, but I like reading about them, looking at pictures, and learning.
5) That the good ones are out of my price range at the current time, but even the cheap ones are fun to have.

Anyway, I've been reading here and learning a lot. I'm personally fixated on the knives with a Tanto blade. It reminds me of my martial arts days, I think; I cannot find another reasonable explanation.

Anyway, I bought my first Ka-Bar, my first kind of "brand name" knife. It was on the cheapest end possible, the K-2, but its a start for me.

I know it isn't the $300+ stuff that gets mentioned here, but I thought I'd share it with the group...

Anyone have or have used one of these Boker Plus Cop Tool 6" Serrated Chisel Point 440C Stainless Steel Blade G10 Handle Black - MidwayUSA (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=685948&utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=free&utm_campaign=655)
I just ordered 5 of them for gifts and for my BOBs, at $30 each and being Boker, I thought they'd be worth checking out. Any thoughts?

Help?

Hey guys, I thought maybe someone here could help me out! My ex fiancee and her parents went to Fort Waynes gun/knife show in Oct this year. There was someone there selling knife sharpeners (I was told he custom makes these) He was showing people how it works and it did a GREAT job on my blade. I was told that after 10 or 15 years you spin something on it just a little and it (The sharpener) is like new again! (Basically, you can use it your whole life and it will always work. I was told it's VERY easy and you don't need to have the right angle, it's already set right)

I know that isn't much information -- but do any of you know who this is or how to buy one?

Any help would be GREAT!

Thanks!
