INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - It's called "less lethal," but bean bag rounds pack a serious punch.

"It still can cause serious bodily injury or death, you have to be judicious about how you deploy it and when you deploy it," said Lt. Tom Sellas, commander of IMPD’s SWAT team.

Right now only IMPD SWAT has access to the tool. The Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police has been pushing the city to purchase bean bags for all districts. Officials say that should happen by the summer.

And I guarantee every time someone gets shot with a real gun, the first question will be why a beanbag round wasn't used.

Hopefully we will get a new Chief (not speaking badly of Riggs) who won't engage in silly discussions with the baiters. Bean bags will allow some officers another option they may use in an attempt to avoid using deadly force. If deadly force was justified, it was justified, that should be the end of that line of questioning.
