People in stressful situations do odd things. That is not a criticism, but an observation.

    Samaritan: Trooper, are you ok?
Trooper (getting his head bashed against the pavement): Gghhruhdhun...
Douchebag: He's fine, we're only messing around. We're really lovers.
    Samaritan: He doesn't look fine.
    Trooper: GHUHHRHUSHUGNG
Douchebag: This isn't what it looks like. He was banging my wife.
Samaritan: I think you should let him up now, he's doesn't look right.
    Trooper: GHhugh Kuhruhr hifhfurh
Douchebag: See, he said he's fine.
Samaritan: Look, I'm getting my gun.

As Lex so eloquently noted, I feel the civvie could have performed his shooting with a tad more celerity. Wrestling with a cop is one thing, coming across one having his head bashed into the pavement demands immediate action as any one of those hits could prove fatal or permanently damaging.

Yeah, contrary to INGO speculation, I'm seeing this story all over the place.

Heck, if it makes Yahoo news front page, it'll get more views than on NBC Nightly News.

Nor the one about the guy who shot at the officer in Georgia.

Yeah, what the heck was up with that?

Couldn't tell what kind of pistol the dude had. That deputy cleared the fence better coming back than he did the first time.

Yeah, I couldn't figure out why the guy shot at him in the first place. The officer (or deputy) was on a welfare check, I believe they said.

Yeah, the gun almost seemed like a derringer of some sort, or small revolver.

Can't figure out shooting at the car when he knew no one was in it, but not at the front windshield.

Apparently shooter was having a "mental issue." Well, NSSherlock.

I'm really glad this Arizona State Trooper was saved.
As they say "no good deed goes unpunished".
The BEST way the police can thank this good Samaritan is to promptly return the gun they no doubt "confiscated" (stole) from him as "evidence", that he'll likely never see again.

    Yes.
When something is taken from somebody who committed a legal act (self defense) and not returned IS theft.
If God forbid somebody has to use their gun in self defense, it should be returned to them the moment it's established at the scene that they're the "good guy".
