I thought i recently heard on the radio something about a bill being proposed to allow carry in a place of worship. I thought if there wasn't a daycare on site it was legal.

Schools are always schools, even if they are also churches (or anything else, for that matter).

It is not illegal to carry in a house of worship in Indiana.

    Wonder what bill this is?

I remember reading a summary of the bill on FB a while back. It will allow carry at church on Sunday even though there is a day care or school present during the week.

I found this, but doesn't mention places of worship
The following is a list of places that are off-limits when carrying a concealed weapon in Indiana:
    • In or On School Property.
    • On a school bus
    • In or on property that is being used by a school for a school function
    • Private School(IC 20*9.1*1*3) & (IC 35*41*1*24.7)
    • Head Start (IC 35*41*1*24.7)
    • Preschool (IC 35-41-1-24.7)
    • IC 35*47*9*1Allows the carry of firearms by persons permitted to possess and who are transporting a person to or from school or a school function.
    • On an aircraft
    • Controlled access areas of an airport
    • During annual State Fair 80 IAC 4-4-4 (Must lock in vehicle)
    • Shipping port 130 IAC 4-1-8 (Controlled by Indiana Port Commission)
    • A riverboat Casino

If your house of worship is JUST a house of worship, carry away. The bill deals with churches on school property or churches with schools.

My church met at Hosford Park Elementary for a while, then Merrillville High School.

    (2) while attending a worship service or religious ceremony conducted at a house of worship located on the school property.

But still "attending worship service" or "religious ceremony?" ??? does a small group bible study count? does a church youth-group activity count? what about a church board meeting? Lots of reasons to be at church other than attending a worship service or religious ceremony ...

edit: nevermind. I was thinking about like the OP mentioned, eg day care or pre-k w/in the church, not a church w/in an actual school... not sure how this bill helps the former situation?

I don't know if my church is on school property or visa versa. They are not connected in anyway and there is no day care in the church. when i do go into the school cafeteria for coffee n donuts i do leave it is my vehicle.

The confusion with churches usually around pre-school, daycare, and private schools. The bill linked above would exempt worshipers and church staff/volunteers from the current ban on carry at churches that are also "schools" by law.

It is a nice gesture. Would be a bit better, IMHO, to tighten up the school definition, or remove the ban altogether.

    .
If they are separate parcels, you should be go to go legally. If it is one parcel, all buildings are a school by IC. As is the parking lot.

    Yeah, blows my mind, too.

I need to put this link in my sigline:

As the old adage says better be judged by 12 than carried by 6.. I carry with the blessing of the pastor.

Luckily our church has nothing to do with a school so I carry every service. Did someone bring an AR with them to the sound booth on Christmas day when ISIS was threatening churches? Maybe.

I go to a church that had a school attached from like 1960 to 2005. Then the school shut down and then around 2010 they reinstated a daycare/preschool. The church sanctuary has a door, but it is technically connected to the school...
