My cousin passed a few years ago and his wife is thinking of selling some of his guns. This is one I'd like to get. It's an older one from like the '80's.
I see on GB new they're going for $500 and up.
I really don't want to pay new price, but I want to be fair about it

I'm no expert but that seems shockingly high. Obviously I'm not counting the sentimental value in that particular gun. I'm speaking of the price you saw. I'd think around $300. And besides the cousin factor, I believe those guns were of decent quality.
Again, just shooting form the hip here.

Is that what people are asking, or what people are actually paying?

    Usually a big difference.

    That was the current auctions

I've shot it numerous times and it seemed like a decent rifle, nice wood to metal fit, seemed solid

Best GB auction to follow is a no reserve. Those are solid rifles, based on the old Winchester action. I've seen the bigger bore guns in 454 sell for $500 at a show, so I would expect the 357 to be somewhat less.

A new Uberti 1873 will be nearly $1k.

Not sure about an older version, but I picked up a new .357 M92 about two years ago for Lile $409 plus tax at the Indy 1500. I had been looking and that was a good price at the time. I had been seeing them for $429-$459 online and at other vendors.

Actually that price sounds pretty much on the nose to me.
If you consider that Marlin discontinued the 1894 before they sold to Remington. That caused the price of all the older 1894's to jump quite a bit.
I know this because I bought a brand new 1894 the year before.
The price of mine almost doubled what I paid for it in just one year.

Pistol caliber carbines have been extremely popular of late.
Maybe now that people are allowed to use high power rifles on private land, there may be more used pcr's on the market for a better price.

I wouldn't be going over $500, but I don;t think that's out of the ballpark either.
This is assuming the rifle is in great shape.
