As much as I value modern vaccination, and truly think everyone should receive appropriate vaccination, I would never advocate obligatory vaccination.

Shouldn't simple autonomy be a good enough reason for vaccine refusal?!?! I sure think so.

Autism went from 1 in 2500 to 1 in 88 and even though the we're told the medical profession and the government does not know where it comes from, they are sure it is not a result of immunizations. The problem with that is all of the cases of older children becoming autistic after receiving immunizations.

Past & Present: Autism Prevalence Rate
1985: The prevalence of Autism is 1 in 2500 births
2000: Autism rates rise to 1 in 500
2004: 1 in 166 children are affected with Autism
2009: 1 in 91 births result in an Autism diagnosis
2012: 1 in 88 children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder by age eight
It is now 1 in less than 80

"They" always start out slow when taking away our freedom/choices. The things they try to "sell" always have a "good" reason behind them, but the end result will advance their agenda.

The diagnosis of Autism has been expanded continuously over the past 20 years. This accounts for much of the increase in Autism diagnosis. However, you should have a choice to go without vaccinations and put your child at risk to contract measles or polio. It is (was) a free country.

Several years ago I read something like 40% positive benefits, 55% no noticeable affect/protection and 5% severe/permanent side effect were considered to be the acceptable results by the state and federal health departments of the treatments that were being forced upon us. That sounds pretty good unless you are part of the 5% who ends up much worse than if they had just been left alone. I wish that I could remember where it came from.

There is a lot of disinformation out there, but the autism rates are correct. Those rates have changed a lot of opinions. If they don't get your attention, what will?

When I was a child parents would allow their children to get the measles. I don't know of anyone suffering any permanent damage from the measles, but I know people, especially military families, that have children with autism. Military families get more immunizations than most folks. I got so many at one time that I could taste the chemicals when they got done. I do believe that children are weaker now than in the past 50 years. Starting off more than half the children with baby formula containing corn syrup and soy as the main ingredient, is part of the problem. Most of their diets don't improve after that.

He opens the article claiming his is a 'pragmatic argument for coerced vaccinations' and through some impressive mental gymnastics claims at the end that 'people who refuse vaccination are asserting that they have a right to “swing” their microbes at other people. There is no principled libertarian case for their free-riding refusal to take responsibility for their own microbes'

The principled case is freedom of association and from coercion, call it a pragmatic argument but don't claim there's not a 'principled libertarian case' against it.

Correlation does not imply causation. There are many other reasons why it could have jumped.

You're confused here, those are Republicans.

If Reason is the bellwether of libertarian thought that the author of the OP claims, the separation between your average republican and libertarian isn't as crisp and clear as many have claimed.

The cool thing about libertarians is that when an imposter shows up wearing their name, people will gladly call them out.
