I've told this story before, but it bears repeating, I think: In 2004 I attended a Warrant Officer Staff Course at Ft. Rucker. This class contained warrant officers from all branches of the Army, and included a Special Forces communications warrant officer who was at that time serving on the White House Communications Office staff. He had been there for Clinton's last term and all of GW Bush's first term. I got him alone at the gym one evening and asked him if he could, in general terms, say anything about what the two Commanders-In-Chief were like on a day-to-day basis. He said something to the effect (and I am deliberately paraphrasing his careful language here) that "the other guy" (Clinton) was never on time for his published schedule and basically ignored any military personnel or anyone else who wasn't part of his immediate White House staff or security. He said (again, paraphrasing) "this guy" is always on time, and always takes time to thank us for what we're doing and for doing a great job. He also mentioned that Bush often quietly visited the local military hospitals and wounded troops. I was unhappy with some domestic policy decisions that Bush made (both Bushes, in fact) but I never faulted him as a C-in-C.

Whenever he appears with a group of military I wonder if they are being coerced into being there. Frankly sometimes it doesn't appear so when I see big smiles and hearty handshakes.

Whatever anyone thinks of Bush, and I wasn't happy with some of what he did, he is an honorable man.

Going way back, not way way back,I remember William J.Clinton slamming America standing on some steps in England. I am OK with it standing on OUR SOIL, But to Grandstand on foreign soil with a bunch Eurosocialists is over the top. And,during the Bush/Gore Chad Debachle,I remember that FXXXXXg Scumbag Al Gore not wanting to count the OVERSEA MILITARY VOTES....(they had to be collected from halfway around the world) NOT WANTING TO COUNT OUR MILITARY VOTE,AND POSSIBALLY RUN THE MILITARY......WHAT IS WRONG WITH POWER HUNGRY LOWLIFES. It is not a Obama thing,IT IS A MODERN SOCIALISTDEMOCRAT THING.I DON'T SEE NO END IN SIGHT.

Which of the prospective candidates are veterans? I don't care if they have family or friends who served, blah, blah, blah. If THEY have not served, I don't care how much they "love their country," the service members MOST LIKELY will still be seen as pawns, regardless of their political party affiliation.

I think the gist of the article is that even among politicians who "haven't served," there can still be a big gradient in terms of the respect they share with members of the armed forces.
All politicians who didn't serve, despite your cautiously-worded implication to the contrary, are not equal.

Some folks get caught up in the "celebrity" of the person they are meeting. I've seen it with cops, too, working a concert or something. I had some "famous" former NFL quarterback start acting like a doooosh during the Super Bowl hooplah and to me he was just another drunk I was considering locking up. Some other cops I was with had quite a different reaction. I've no doubt the same effect takes place when meeting other doooshes who are famous.

Clinton is synonomous with being low rent disrepectful trumped up trailer trash (coded language) slime. It's a real shame they've gotten away with what they've done and prospered for it.

I don't think there's been any presidency that didn't "love" America. I think to be more correct, they simply don't love a particular version of someone's else's America.

Right........... the American version of America is overrated........ It needs to be more European socialist with a bit of banana republic thrown into the mix to be loved.

Honest military members, if they think about such things, realize they are "pawns" to ANY Administration, since their job is to go kill people and break things as they are directed by the Commander-In-Chief. All they can hope for is that the C-in-C will not waste their lives.

Based on the last two elections, there is obviously no consensus as to what the "American" version of America is.

Well, C-inCs have a pretty poor track record regarding that, since 1945.

Big difference between the former Presidential President and the current dirt bag. Odumbo would probably issue an executive order of disgust for the mother and her son.
I can't wait till we get a real president again who at least loves this country and doesn't intentionaly try to harm and embarrass it. Everyone I've talked to in the military hates odumbo

I think the great majority of Americans would prefer a president who keeps us out of unnecessary wars, than one who doesn't and then visits the victims of such tragedies.

Ahhh, Ft Rucker.... Lots of memories there.
I was only there twice: once for Advanced Flight School in 1971/72 and again for WO Staff Course in 2004. Unlike many of my contemporaries, I never went back for aircraft transitions or schools except for 2004. However, the post was certainly a far cry from the way I remembered it in '72. But then there was a big paradigm shift in the Army culture between '72 and 2004.
