"This Chicago Firearms Company "Protector" also known as the Chicago Palm Pistol has serial number 4866 and is .32 extra short caliber. The gun retains about 70% of the original blued finish and is mechanically fine with excellent markings. This variety has no engraving around the barrel or on the frame. Most examples observed are engraved…this example is quite scarce. Peter Finnegan of Austin, Illinois purchased the patent rights for the Protector Palm pistol from the Minneapolis Firearms Company in 1892 and established a new company…The Chicago Firearms Company instituting design improvements making the gun more reliable. The improved pistol is slightly larger, the safety functioned better and the sideplate was more secure; the entire gun was sturdier. He contracted with Ames Sword Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts to manufacture the weapons and deliver them to him in time for the opening of the Columbian Exhibition (The Chicago World's Fair of 1892). Ames defaulted and did not deliver until after the Exhibition had closed and even then, only a small percentage of the contract was delivered. Finnegan sued Ames eventually winning cash settlement with the Ames Sword Co. becoming the owner of 13,000 Protector Palm pistols that they sold from 1894 through 1910 although the guns themselves were all made prior to 1898"

    Medicare to cover prescription handguns?

Thought this was an interesting article since I have rheumatoid arthritis and find some handguns painful to shoot.

    Medicare to Cover Prescription Handguns?

We recently reported about a new 9mm handgun that was designed for folks suffering from arthritis and other disabilities affecting the hands. Constitution Arms, the manufacturer of the firearm, is reporting that the FDA has formally designated the gun as a medical gadget.

Constitution Arms contacted us with the following information:
Several weeks ago you were kind enough to blog about the Palm Pistol. We thought you might be interested to learn that the FDA has completed its “Device/Not a Device” determination and concluded the handgun will be listed as a Class I Medical Device, exempt from 510(k) Pre-Market Notification in accordance with 21 CFR 890.5050 “Daily Activity Assist Device.”

Cool gun, glad that ergonomics are making their way into the firearms industry. On the other hand though I dont feel they should be covered by medicare.

The Brady Campaign strikes again :chillout:

    Last update: 5:03 p.m. EST Dec. 8, 2008
    WASHINGTON, Dec 08, 2008

The headlines were attention-grabbing. Discovery News wrote "FDA Approves Handgun for the Handicapped." The website NowPublic wrote "FDA Certifies Handgun as 'Medical Device.'" Medgadget, which calls itself "the internet journal of emerging medical technologies," wrote "Medicare to Cover Prescription Handguns?"

The New Zealand Herald wrote "A U.S. gun company will market a pistol to elderly Americans that will be subsidi[z]ed by the government in the same way as a wheelchair or walking frame." FOX News wrote the gun's manufacturer "says it's had it certified by the FDA as a 'Class I Medical Device.' That means doctors could prescribe the handgun to qualified patients, who would then have some or all of the cost reimbursed by Medicare or private insurance."
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration says otherwise.

After a flurry of calls generated by the manufacturer of the Palm Pistol, a single-shot 9mm handgun that rests in the palm and fires when squeezed, the FDA told the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence on Monday that it certainly had not approved the device. Shortly after the Brady organization contacted FDA, the agency issued a statement saying "the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that the Palm Pistol, manufactured by Constitution Arms, is not a medical device under the Federal Food, Drugs, and Cosmetic Act. The manufacturer registered and listed the product in the FDA's electronic database on Dec. 2, 2008. Because the FDA has determined the product is not a medical device under section 201(h) of the Act, FDA is canceling the registration and will return its registration fee."

Matt Carmel, CEO of Constitution Arms in Maplewood, New Jersey and inventor of the device, may be confused by this. Before the FDA's announcement, he was quoted on gun blog SnowflakesinHell.com as saying: "All the 'experts' said the Palm Pistol would never be classified as a medical device by FDA and I proved them wrong. Now all the experts are saying there is no way this will be reimbursable under Medicare. Well, we shall see about that!" And the gun blogger, who calls himself Sebastian, responded, "the progressives created this system, and now we have hijacked it to help people buy guns! Matt has hoisted them on their own petard."

That sentence should mean to everyone that we will have the 2nd Amendment as our method to protect ourselves. These liberal wackos don't have a clue how you can protect yourself from someone that is willing to break any law to get what they want.

Like they expect "to enact and enforce sensible gun laws, regulations and public policies" will keep offenders from invading our homes?
