![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Gun Buyback Has anyone ever turned a firearm over to a gun buyback program? Do we have any comming up in central Indiana? Any idea what the "going rate is for a handgun or rifle at one of these? How complete do the firearms have to be to get money? Long story short, I have some junk taking up to much space that I would like to get rid of. Trying to explore that option but I cant seem to find any good info! School me on gun buybacks, opinions welcome! |

| Expert | Gun buyback programs are a big waste ... I would recommend you take anything like that to a local gunsmith. even if they don't give you anything for the stuff , you made a good friend in the industry that will probably help you out in the future . the reason i say the buybacks are a waste is this . An officer i knew in another state , working a buyback , when a grandmother comes in with a gun her recently departed husband had owned . the officer gives her the standard $20 for it he walks out the back door and puts a colt peacemaker "Origanal" in his car. 2 days later he sells it for $ 5000 to a local collector . anything worth owning dosent get destroyed as they say , most of it ends up in local gunshops for sale ..

I would NOT be espousing those sentiments unless I had evidence to back them up. If I DID have that evidence, I would be compelled to forward it to the proper authorities! ![]()

"Evidence tags" shows that it was checked into an inventory and authorized to be re-sold. The wording of your post suggests otherwise. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I wouldn't sell anything to those people despite what they are paying... it just makes it look like their "cause" is somehow doing something. We should strive to make it obvious how worthless those programs are, not increase their turnout. I also have no doubt officers are "purchasing" some of the guns from those programs. Honestly, I would be disappointed with them if they didn't. Which is worse: taking an old ladies $5k pistol and destroying it, or keeping it for yourself? At least keeping it for yourself shows that you have some appreciation for the guns. Obviously they are both disgusting, the proper thing would be to inform her of its potential value. Of course the department probably prohibits them from doing that. |

![]() | Back on track. Yes, I participated in the local Mishawaka buy back a couple of weeks ago. How complete do the weapons have to be? Barely. I turned in nothing but barreled receivers and got paid. At my buy back this is how it broke down- Working gun- $75 for the first, $25 for each additional Non-working gun- $50 for the first, $25 for each additional All "money" was in the form of gift cards. You could get gift cards for BP gas stations, Martin's supermarkets, Goodwill, Hacienda restaurants, and one more I can think of. I opted for the Martin's gift cards. I turned in nothing but total, absolute trash that NOBODY could use, not even my local gunsmith, and got paid. I will now use those gift cards to feed my family. Most of the folks standing in line in the beginning knew the score and the line was exactly like every line I've ever stood in to get into a gun show. I think I even recognized a face or two from my local gun shows! Talk was the same, too. I also purchased three fully functional firearms from people walking INTO the buy back program. Here's my haul- Remington Apache 66 (practically new) for $100 Ithaca Super 66 20 gauge (excellent condition) for $70 Mossberg 500A with wood furniture (excellent condition) for $100 Yugoslavian WWII leather Mauser sling- $5 I also have a lead on a gunsmith's estate that I will hopefully be purchasing in the coming months. So, as you can see, I have nothing but good things to say about MY local gun buy back program. Regards, Eric
