Odd News Story: Man Arrested Near Capitol After IED, Rifle, Ammunition Found

Story seems odd at best:

Man Arrested Near Capitol After IED, Rifle, Ammunition Allegedly Found in Jeep

Basically:

Quote:
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man is under arrest in Washington after an improvised explosive device, a rifle and some ammunition were allegedly found in his jeep, Capitol Police said Friday.

The man stopped to ask police for directions near the Capitol building at about 11 a.m. EDT Friday, at the intersection of 2nd and Independence Avenue Southeast, according to Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

The officer responding noticed a rifle case on the car seat and inspected the jeep, discovering the IED, rifle and ammunition. A canine unit was enlisted to help.

"They've all been rendered safe right now because they're in the custody of Capitol Police," Schneider told reporters at a briefing Friday.

The officer took the unidentified man into custody; the vehicle is still being searched.

Library of Congress employees near where the jeep was stopped were evacuated, and several roads are closed while police continue their investigation.

Schneider said that it wasn't clear what the man intended to do with the cache of weapons.

The IED is on its way to the FBI
Ok, since it is a foxnews exclusive, I already have my doubts. Add to that the usual anti-gun comments: "unsafe", "safe now in hands of gov't", "cache of weapons" and the new unclear use of "ied".

Was this a terrorist who was so bright as to have his weapons cased and in plain view while asking an LEO for directions to his target or safe house? If so, then so be it and glad he was taken down.

Or, was this a simple gun owner with safely stored firearms?

What about the IED? Lord knows what that was. Maybe it was real, maybe it was a mockup, maybe it was an inert grenade from a gunshow, maybe...

Sadly this story will run and disappear from the radar before the report from the FBI comes back.

To me it just smells fishy.

Next Supreme Court test case?

On reflection, though, it can't be a butane lighter. He could have just claimed he used it to light joints, and it would have been drug paraphernalia and the Democrats would have said it was an irrelevant find in the search, only because they couldn't call it an illegal search and seizure and still keep the guns.

Blessings,
B

Here's a possibility.................

Maybe, just maybe, the items the guy had were exactly what they were reported to be. Maybe, just maybe, the Capitol Police were doing their job. Or, maybe the guy was just rabbit hunting near the Capitol. Yeah, that's it, rabbit hunting. Lets take up a collection for his defense fund.

Update from CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Capitol Police arrested a man Friday after an officer spotted a rifle in his car when he stopped the officer to ask for directions two blocks from the Capitol building. Christopher Shelton Timmons, 27, has been charged with carrying a deadly weapon, having an unregistered firearm and having unregistered ammunition, Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said.
In addition to the rifle -- an AK-47 -- police found a grenade, a pistol, ammunition, loaded magazines "and several other items of concern to the police" in the Jeep Cherokee he was driving.

Authorities said Timmons was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon in March in Albemarle County, Virginia, and served a month in jail. In that incident, Timmons had two grenades in his car, said Albemarle Police Chief John Miller.
The pins had been removed and the grenades were filled with powder, authorities said. They had an adhesive on top to close them and a firecracker for a fuse.

Law enforcement sources said the grenades were similar to an item found in Timmons vehicle Friday. That device has been taken to the FBI facility in Quantico, Virginia.
Members of the joint terrorism task force are involved in the investigation, sources said, but so far no one is suggesting Timmons was planning an attack of some kind.

Hmmm. Two blocks from the Capitol building with an AK, pistol, extra mags and what is probably an inert grenade filled with black powder and fused with a firecracker.

I'm thinking he might have been up to no good.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say he was up to no good.

But, I am a little annoyed with their use of "IED" to describe the black powder grenades.

Well, the term IED certainly would cover it. An inert/fake grenade filled with explosive and fused is certainly an improvised explosive device. Granted, it's not the typical IED we hear about, like an artillery shell with a cell phone detonator. But an IED, nonetheless. Just a little one.

Yes, it was an Improvised Explosive Device, but the way it was reported was misleading. When they report the man had an IED near the Capitol, they meant it was a scare tactic like he had a car-bomb IMO. The same way they just had to Identify the rifle as an AK-47. I was happy to see they left out "Baby-killing, ultra-deadly machine gun, assault rifle" though
