Alabama Gunman Press Conference

I was wondering if anyone else saw the press conference covering the Alabama Gunman? During the conference a State Patrolman kept reiterating that the gunman used "assault weapons" (SKS and Bushmaster AR) that had "high capacity magazines". After the State Patrolman spoke a Sheriff was taking questions and a reporter was trying to set him up with a question about the weapons used. The Sheriff made the statement that "It would have been the same if he had used a shotgun".

I am wondering if the Sheriff's comment about the outcome being the same if a shotgun was used will get as much media coverage (and use) as the repeated comments about "Assault Weapons" and "High Capacity Magazines"

What are your thoughts and concerns?

It appears the Sheriff understands the issue and isn't going to be a fanboy for the media.

That being said, I doubt his statement about the outcome being the same with a shotgun will get much play. Two reasons: It is much more sexy to blame it on "assault weapons". And, most of the media don't even know the difference between different types of guns/rifles, etc. In the end, assault weapons will get the air time IMHO.

Kudos for the Sheriff! The State guy is probably a media relations goof who knows precious little about guns but does knows how to play the media, reality and truth be damned!

I did read a snippet (that was removed quickly) that some of the townspeople said they took cover, "Going for their own firearms", but by the time they made it out the guy was gone..
