well... anyone who knows anything about Monsanto should know this is bad news. for those who don't know, basically Monsanto creates seeds in a lab. these seeds grow into food! this resulting food has the potential to make you sick... very sick. now not only will you never know if these "franken-foods" are in your diet, you won't be able to sue Monsanto for making you sick! :xmad: i guess money CAN buy anything... here's the link

My favorite thing that Monsanto has done is with seed. They sell their specially modified soybean seed to farmers, but some old-fashioned farmers like to save their own seed for next years planting.

So, Monsanto waits a couple of seasons, then they sue the old-fashioned farmer for using Monsanto seed without paying for it. Monsanto knows that enough pollen from their seed will have blown over and mixed so that their modified genes will be there.

So, Mr. old-fashioned farmer can either stop using his own seed, or go broke fighting in court.

To understand how all this happens, get a copy of the U.S. Constitution and wherever it says "people", substitute $$$$$$. Then you might get it.

What's the difference between genetically modified (frankenfood) and selective breeding to get the best wheat, corn, soy beans, sheep, horses, cows, with the best properties. One works alot faster. Certainly these GM foods need to be studied in humans to ensure that the gene for endo Roundup in grains does not make humans sick.

One is using the natural means of adaptation that all animals and plants use to survive in various environments, while the other involves artificially inserting/removing genes into a plant to added genetic resistances etc. The law of unintended consequences applies rather strongly when one artificially messes with the genetic code: look at the damage done to dog breeds with nothing more than natural manipulation for an example of what can go wrong.

Yes, and look how incredibly fragile are some thoroughbreds.

All this selective breeding and inbreeding makes for some genetic anomalies.

Any dog owner can tell you that mutts are generally the most hardy dogs.

You know, I'm a free market guy and a big fan of Milton Friedman.

Monsanto is indefensible, though. Between the corporate welfare it rakes in under the 'farm bills', the abuse of their customers (suing farmers) and now the completely removal of legal remedies for those harmed by GMOs (if ever proved)-- well, has there ever been a better anti-business poster child?

And im sure this has not contributed at all to the growing number of disabilities, allergins etc

    I'm sure you meant purple.

Why is it that we hear so much now about allergies to tree nuts and all that. When I was a kid (not THAT long ago), we never heard of all these allergies to peanuts or almonds or soy or gluten or what have you.

How we have kids out there who will die if they lick the peanut butter knife.

Glad to hear it. Monsanto could never become what it has under a free market system, so fire away. :D Only with the staunch support of bought-and-paid-for politicians and officials could Monsanto's grasp be so strong. Crony capitalism is a scary thing.

Yup, the free market works-- if we'd just let it work. Al the "evils of capitalism" are really the evils of gov't corruption of such.

It does nothing of the sort. This is what happens when you get news from Russia state television.

“Monsanto Protection Actâ€: Anti-GMO Conspiracy Theorists Lose It Over Minor Deregulation | The Skeptical Libertarian

This is the section that the Soviets and Alex Jones are lying about.

Sec. 735. In the event that a determination of non-regulated status made pursuant to section 411 of the Plant Protection Act is or has been invalidated or vacated, the Secretary of Agriculture shall, notwithstanding any other provision of law, upon request by a farmer, grower, farm operator, or producer, immediately grant temporary permit(s) or temporary deregulation in part, subject to necessary and appropriate conditions consistent with section 411(a) or 412(c) of the Plant Protection Act, which interim conditions shall authorize the movement, introduction, continued cultivation, commercialization and other specifically enumerated activities and requirements, including measures designed to mitigate or minimize potential adverse environmental effects, if any, relevant to the Secretary’s evaluation of the petition for non-regulated status, while ensuring that growers or other users are able to move, plant, cultivate, introduce into commerce and carry out other authorized activities in a timely manner: Provided, That all such conditions shall be applicable only for the interim period necessary for the Secretary to complete any required analyses or consultations related to the petition for non-regulated status: Provided further, That nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the Secretary’s authority under section 411, 412 and 414 of the Plant Protection Act.
For the followers of Soviet news channels, tell me what that means. Please. Here is a link to the PPA for reference.

Don't allow Jenny McCarthy and Soviets to indoctrinate you with agricultural mythology.
