Was wanting to know what type of wood the GP 100's originally used in their grips for the older models. Was it always a darker wood? Like Gocalo Alves, Rosewood or something lighter?

Are you just curious or looking to replace them? Either way, Look at ALTAMONT grips - seems like they bought out the contract to make the older style grips. Most of the older ones were rosewood (and maybe some walnut?).
Again, just check out altamont. I know some retailers have the inserts still for sale, and you might be able to find the grip (rubber) portion still for sale as well.

Was wanting to know what original grips looked like and made of. Have been thinking about getting one but there are a lot of after market stuff out there.

I'm pretty sure the grip inserts were walnut early on then switched to rosewood ( just like the single actions) before the switch to Hogue all rubber grips.

Pretty sure this link shows one in walnut...

And this looks to be rosewood...

Rosewood here it appears on the factory replacements from Brownells

Scroll way down and see a pic of an adjustable sight GP100 but with fixed sight grips, uses the same inserts as SP101 and supplied on the fixed sight model guns. Some folks liked the rounded butt better and switched these out on the adjustable sight guns.

Some of the folks on the Ruger forums say that in addition to walnut the inserts were made of goncalo alves
    before the switch to rosewood.

I tried there without success. Have heard they used Cocobolo but I didn't think that was correct. It's beautiful wood but if I'm paying top dollar then I want the gun to be original. Goncalo alves or Rosewood is what I'm looking for thanks.

Rosewood ( left) does look nice on these imo , the walnut pair in the center look a little pale to me but that could also be partly due to age.
