I am looking to get a 300 Blackout AR in a pistol configuration. If it is purchased as a pistol, what are the legalities of being able to put a .223 rifle length upper on it with a rifle stock? I thought it would be nice to be able to go back and forth depending on what I am hunting or wanting to shoot at that time. I just want to make sure I am following the law in what I am wanting to do.

For those of you with a 300 Blackout pistol, have any of you deer hunted with it? What were your results? Is there a round you would recommend for deer hunting?

    Thanks in advance.

I'll chime in here. I could be wrong but I believe that if starts out as a pistol you may convert it to a rifle but not the reverse. Once a rifle, its a rifle to the end. I'm sure others will come along and confirm or rip me a new one....

As far as hunting, I used mine with success this past season for the first time since building and went with the Barnes 110 gr. Vor-Tex. It did an amazing job on a buck running straight towards me ( I'm standing on the ground ), dropping it after breaking his front shoulder and ripping thru his heart.

Let me re-phrase, if it STARTS out as a rifle, its a rifle. As a pistol you can convert to a rifle or switch back to a pistol. Unless of course I am wrong which would make all of this a mute point...:twocents:

I am just finishing up a 300 Blackout pistol built and would recommend against swapping back and forth between rifle and pistol. I'm pretty sure that you can do that legally if it does not start out as a rifle, but it would be a PITA to swap buffer tubes each time you wanted to make the change. Right now, PSA has blem stripped lowers on sale for $49 and a pistol buffer tube for $17. I don't know why they call the lowers blems because when I bought 3 of them last month, they came with consecutive serial numbers and I cannot find anything that would qualify them as a blem.

But, by having a couple of dedicated lowers, you save yourself the trouble of having to swap the buffer tubes when you change.

BTW, this is where I'm at with my build:

Tim on the Military Arms Channel just did a vid with IRAQVET8888 on use of the 300 Blackout for hunting. If I recall, he said he took a wild hog with a short barreled suppressed AR in 300 Blackout.
