So I have it in my mind that I'd like to get a Springfield TRP. With that in mind I ventured to my local LGS and found that he didn't have one in stock(bummer) but he did have a Sig Sauer Scorpion that was very nice. Talk me out of the Sig or not.

I'm sure churchmouse will swing by here and tell you get the TRP. That being said, I would buy the TRP. I have not owned either but would rather have a Springfield. Depending on your budget, you make look at Dan Wesson too.

Go look at the Indiana Gun Club and pick up a Dan Wesson Specialist or Valor exactly like the TRP just on steroids and generally only $200-$400 more depending on finish options.

I'm not adverse to spending a few hundred more for the DW the issue here is that I don't have all of the funds up front and I can do a layaway at my LGS.

Indiana gun club probably has some TRP's
    Check their website.

    I'll save Churchmouse the trouble....
The Sig 1911's are not real 1911's :D... which is true

They do have some internal & external differences.
A big difference is that Sig 1911's won't fit 95% of standard 1911 holsters because of the slide design

All of this having been said I'm in the $1200 to $1500 price range which would seem to open up a range of options. I can always save the money up so that i can buy from someplace other than my LGS.

$1500 might get you a nice used Les Baer if you are patient and wait for the right deal to come along.
Dan Wesson and the TRP are both excellent choices

I've owned both. The Sig gave me some feeding issues and had to go back to Sig a time or two. The customer service experience was ... annoying to say the least. If you get a working one, they feel nice and look nice and are quite accurate. I got a great deal on my TRP and have customized it a bit. Still have not had a malfunction with it. Only TRP qualm is that I don't like the adjustable rear sight on the railed models. Mine is traditional and shoots like a dream. I'm bad and don't shoot it nearly as much as I should though :( 9mm is just so much cheaper.

That being said: A working Sig would be a good gun, but the fit and finish on the TRP is in a different category (as is SA's customer service).

I'll definitely second this. When I was originally looking for a railed 1911, I looked at the TRP pretty hard, and discovered the DW Specialist. After making it my own with a few tweeks, it became perfect for me. I realized after trying to sell it, that is was something I didn't want to get rid of and selling it would have been a huge regret. It sits front and center in my safe and will be one of the last ones I ever get rid of. Definitely worth the extra loot.
