help dating a S&W w/ serial #

I can't find a good website for dating S&W revolvers using serial numbers.
This is a model 19-5
Serial # ACY 31xx

I know it's from the 80's, but anything more specific would be appreciated.

Per some googling: Your ACY would fall between 1/83-ABL4000 and 10/83-ADE6700. So, it shipped in 1983. To get any closer, you need an historian's letter.

If you want to date a S&W you need to take it out to the range often and buy it lots of boxes of ammo.

Call S&W they will tell you. I have done this with all my 3rd gen S&W's. When I lost the list of all 6 I own I called and the guy I talked too asked me to email him the Model and serials. Within a few days he sent me a list of what day they were made and the production number for each one. I guess it depends on who you get when you call S&W customer service.
