So why do some people shun S&W autos?

I've owned 1,2 & 3 gen 59 series S&W's and only 1 problem with any of them but that was after 50k+ rounds IMO one of the best guns out there for the price

the only "problem" I can see with the S&W 3rd gen autos is the trigger..
it is hit / miss that you will get a good trigger.. whe they are good , they can be really good.. when they are bad.. they can be real bad..
most of them can not have much work done on the trigger.. so production runs of them , the lockwork parts are made from a metal powder formed & hardened.. if you file the, you risk cracking the hardened surface..

so, a lot of gunsmiths do not want to work with them..

I've always wanted to shoot one. They are a very recognizable firearm, but it seems it time has passed for whatever reason.

I like mine. 4513TSW and 3913TSW. The 4513tsw was a police gun.

Nice! I have never paid them much attention either but they are some fine looking pistols actually. I'm an M&P addict but I wouldn't mind one of those too.

They are probably really nice pistols,
but the safeties are backwards! IMHO YMMV

The main reason your seeing so many S&W pistols in gun shops are problems, it's either the gun itself or operator problems that occur with the Smith pistols.

And of course one of main reasons is because of trade-in's for a Glock.

Every time Smith sells a new Sigma polymer pistol they have to pay a royalty to Glock. Currently, Glock controls 80% of the Law Enforcement and Government business. This leaves only 20% to All other manufactures including Smith & Wesson, Tarus, Sig Sauer, Kahr etc.

80% market share... I play and bet on that side !!!

I must also mention maintenance. The Glock has only 33-36 parts (depending on the model) that can all be serviced and purchased by the owner without sending the weapon into the factory.

Buy whatever you like brothers and sisters, I'll take a new or used Glock any day knowing it will always work, with a little care, if I need something to save my life or take a life if needed.

The only obstacle standing between with Smith & Wesson's 3rd Gen semi-autos having complete market domination, from late 1980's to today, was simply the popularity of Glock's new fangled plastic pistol. Glock began taking LEO contracts from S&W at a rate they never saw coming. And as we know, where the LEO market goes... So goes the civilian market. Sure there are other high-quality competitors, but none have the market share of S&W or Glock... At least in the US.

Many a gun writer has described the Smith & Wesson 3rd Gen semi-autos as the BEST semi-autos ever. But, that message was always drowned out by the screaming hoards of Glock lovers, all toasting each other with clinking glasses of Kool-Aid.
