Mak vs Bersa

I have been considering buying a Bersa .380 based on many great reports. I already have a Bulgarian Makarov. My question is about the weight difference. Are these two gun similar in weight? They are similar in shape and such, but how about weight or PERCIEVED weight?

They are about the same maybe the bersa is just a little lighter. I had a bersa and still have the mak. To me the mak. just seems to be better built.

Aren't the Bersa's made with an alloy frame + steel slide?

Dimensions being equal...the Bersa should weigh less.

It'd be a tough call for me, though... I'd be tempted to go with the higher capacity, but that's pretty much a wash between these two.

There's a good site that compares pistols of different types at Mouseguns.Com New Indexbut I did not see the Mak in the comparison. They do have some decent info on the Bersa as far as size and weight go.

If you get the all steel Bersa, it's 23oz vs a Mak at 26oz. Bersa does make a lightweight model that's 16oz or so. Other than that, they seem like very similar guns and the calibers are very similar. So unless you want to buy the lightweight Bersa, stick with the Mak.

All of the current Bersas (the "Thunder" series) are alloy-framed; the older 383 series pistols were steel-framed. A Bersa Thunder .380 will be slimmer and lighter than a Makarov, as well as having better sights and a much smoother/lighter DA trigger pull.

I would buy the Bersa to carry and put the Mak away for collection/recreational purposes.

My Makarov is my EDC weapon in an in the waist band holster. It's not so heavy that need to start chopping weight somewhere. If you find you are needing better concealment, try the P3AT in a desantis nemesis pocket holster.

TripleL is on a distinguished road
.380 is hard to find nowadays and expensive if you can find any...just something you might want to consider. Since you already know how good your Bulgarian is why not buy another Makarov to grow your collection. There's the East German, Russian and Chinese versions.

I've got one listed in the Classifieds right now (sorry for the shameless plug). Mods- I hope I didn't violate any rules by saying that. Please delete the post if I did.

I guess the reason I ask is that I really like my Mak for it's sturdiness, and accuracy. I put the heavier recoil spring in it and the felt recoil really changes.

OTOH, I don't like the sharp edges when I carry it, it wasn't designed to be a civilian carry piece. I feel it's kinda heavy (that seems to be my theme lately) for carry. I usually carry my P-32, so that doesn't help me not be wimpy with the weight. The P-32 is so light and small I almost forget it's there, and that makes other guns feel like a brick.

So, to make a long story short, which I never do, I like the nickel Bersa for it's looks, and I just think it would be a better choice for carry because it's designed for it.

Am I being a goof?

No experience with the Bersa but I love my Bulgie MAK. I know everyone has their own ideas about breaking in or testing a pistol. Here is what I do, if I get a new pistol (seldom) I will collect enough factory rounds of for that caliber to load 5-10 magazines and load them in no specific order. Then I fire all the mags, if the gun hiccups on any round the gun gets sold. A gun must fire the round before the round hits the target, and I require 100% reliability with combat pistols without excuses. I have been unable to jam my MAK. The only other guns I have that I can say this about is my G23 and CZ75B. - George
