Any firearm you shoot indoors without benefit of hearing protection is likely to cause some permanent hearing loss. Pick a caliber.... any caliber.... you wake up in the middle of the night, and have to fire a shot/shots... your ears will ring for a period of time, ( minutes to hours ) you'll see spots before your eyes, and you may sustain some permanent hearing damage, but the only alternatives are refusing to fire that shot inside, or convincing that intruder to wait until you get hearing protection in place.
