Need advise Beretta .40 VS 9mm

I currently own a Beretta .40 cal 96L model. I love this gun and have no problems with it, but I'm also thinking about the future. I have researched th Beretta cx4 storm and like every thing I have ready on it. So my thoughts are trade my .40cal in and get a 9mm. This way when the time comes I can get the cx4 both the long gun and hand gun use the same ammo.

BUT.... Is this really a good idea.

Should I just keep my .40 cal?????

I used to have a sig p226 and loved the way this gun operated, but I like the idea of the safety (since I have a small child in the house). I keep the weapon in a safe location, but we have seen the stories of kids getting to the guns.

Also please note I have not fired a 9mm Beretta, I would think it would be as nice as the .40 cal though.

So bottom line Pro's and Con's on the .40cal v 9mm. Any and all ideas welcome.

Thanks.

I've always been a 9mm guy. Reasons are:

Adequate SD caliber

More capacity

Cheap (somewhat) ammo so plenty of practice with it

I've moved away from the .40 S&W platform as well...

The .40 in the Beretta is a honey, the 9mm even more so. Big heavy pistols like that just absorb the recoil nicely.

What it comes down to, really, is your personal preference.

All things being equal, though, (and they really are) 9mm is generally less expensive than .40. You can really save money with steel-cased 9mm ammo. I don't recall ever seeing that in .40.

I love the .40 cal. I went from a Taurus PT92 (9mm)to a Glock 22 (.40). The stopping power of the 40 is much better. It still carries 15 in the clip. + In my area i can find lots of .40 ammo for $14.95 a box of 50. Their is NO 9mm around me. Cant find none. I still got both guns but I carry the .40 Just my preference.

Why don't you just get the CX4 in .40 when time comes? You can probably even get one with the same mag well as your 96 so you can use the same mags in both guns. There is a chart on Berettas site that lists which CX4's take which mags. Also check out Berettaforum.net

If you like the 96, you will love the 92. Whether you stay with your 96 and get a .40S&W CX4 or keep your 96, add a 92FS and CX4 9mm is up to you. Personally I like the 9mm in many firearms over the .40 because it is less punishing to play with. As for the continuing arguement of 9mm vs. 40S&W, shot placement is more important than caliber.

Decissions, decissions!

I thinks its a great idea to have a pistol & rifle in the same caliber. Back during the Y2K scare my uncle explained to me the importance of it. I have a Beretta 92 but I almost bought the 96 instead just because I found one at a great price. I already had a XD in .40 and decided to go with the 9mm at a higher price just to have a change up.

I see no reason not to standardize on the 9mm. I have a 9mm CX4 which I love. I also have a 40 cal G27 but my next handgun will be a full size 9.

I too like the idea of sharing the ammo between the pistol and rifle.

I agree the 40 cal has more stopping power, but IMHO the 9mm is adequate.

I think having two Berettas would be awesome as well. The Storm has served me superbly over the last 7 years.

Good luck...

KEEP the 96. I have never heard anyone say "boy am I glad I got rid of that Beretta." It is a well made gun. If you get rid of it, you will say, "I used to have a 96. I traded it for this 9mm. I wish I still had the 96." I've heard that plenty.

Also, get the 9mm.

Buy a 9MM slide and barrel for your 96 ..

You can get a 92 slide and barrel of gun broker or some other place ..

Change it out the frames are the same , you will have to buy some mags for it also .. but for a couple hundred dollars you can have 2 guns in one and yes it works I have done it ..
