I can't speak for cce1302, but I don't have any problems with the flush mag, and recoil is really no different than a full size. HOWEVER, muzzle whip tends to be an issue when shooting with one hand. Two hands it is more than manageable, but a lot of practice rounds need to be fired to make it a one hand job. I don't have a pic handy of just the XDs, but they're in this one, XD.45 and XD.40SC.

Recoil is not bad. Not painful at all. I can't shoot follow up shots as quickly as with, say, a .22/45, but I can get accurate rounds downrange fairly quickly.
With the 9rd magazines, I just leave my pinky off the bottom. It's not bad at all. It fits better than any finger grooves would fit (especially on pistols where they're in the wrong place for me).
