Strictly Shooting

Anyone ever purchase from or shoot at the Strictly Shooting shop in Evansville?

I've purchased two guns and a rifle there and have had mixed experiences.

I've shot there multiple times and almost bought a gun there once. There guns are averaged priced. For example, they were asking $939 for an HK45. The lowest I eventually found was $900, but there were several places over 1K so I thought it was pretty fair.

In terms of shooting, they are OK. I don't think the range is managed all that well, when they get busy they have a hard time determining when people go in, how many people to allow in before it gets over crowded etc...and it doesn't have the very best of ventilation (after shooting for a couple of hours, you're sneezing black). I don't mind the range, and when its not super crowded its a pretty nice set-up. Also, I wouldn't hesitate to look at their guns, if you shop around, you find some good deals there.

Mixed experiences here as well. They are just a couple blocks from my work and a lot of the guys window shop there but very few buy. There use to be some real Richards in there that would tell you a certain gun was crap and you should buy this one instead. I was in the middle of a background check and walked out due to such talk a while back. The older guy followed me outside and asked what the problem was I explained he offered to cut the price for my trouble I refused and left. Some friendly advice I can handle but that was not the case. I did go back in there looking for a Ruger LCP a while back the older guy remembered me and was very nice. I won't say I won't buy from there again but I will say it would have to be a very rare case. Such as the mystical LCP.
I do know that others have had good experiences there and there are other stories such as mine.
It is a shame a town as big as Evansville cannot have a "good" gun shop. I usually buy from Daves in Holland or Bucks and Jakes in Booneville have some good prices as well as great friendly service.

Neocon:

I too work within a stones throw of the shop and have had mixed feelings. I'd been looking to add a 10mm to my small collection and went there and asked if they could get a glock 20. I received a 5 minute lecture on how the 10mm was the most Godforsaken round ever created and shot like crap.

They just don't seem to appreciate my business.

I will say that the older guy in there (not sure if he is the owner or not) is a really nice guy and has never pushed anything toward or away from me. But some of the others he has working in there are way too pushy for my tastes.
I will say they are wrong about the 10mm. I have a Delta Elite and it shoots very well and is quite accurate. It does cost a little more to shoot but that is my only complaint.

Here's another example of Strictly Shooting: I went in 15 minutes before closing tonight to BUY A GUN and they were packing up all the guns and holsters. Pretty much just ignored me. When I asked if I could see a gun, they told me to come back tomorrow.

Oh well, went down the street and bought a gun at Gander Mountain.

That has to be frustrating...whatever happened to staying open until you are supposed to close and then spending a half our after close putting your stuff up.
Out of curiosity though, did you actually find a gun at gander mountain that wasn't way over priced? I know that they will occasionally have deals on used or close out guns...but every time I've been in there they have been the most expensive on any gun I was looking at.

I paid $20 more at Gander Mountain. I agree, the prices are very high at Gander Mountain, but I was willing to pay it in this case. At least they treat me with respect -- and they have lots of nice stuff to look at.

For $20, its definitely worth it to get what you were looking for at that time (instead of "come back later") and have people who treat you well. I have gotten to the point where the vast majority of my purchases come from one place because I enjoy the experience of shopping there as much as I do the process of buying what I am looking for. I think a lot of places don't understand that many of us want to enjoy the experience of looking at guns and trying to decide what we want to buy and, if they provide an environment that is conducive to that, most of us will be loyal customers).

BTW, congrats on the new purchase...what'd you pick up?
