    its the place where an m203 grenade launchers mounting bracket has a strap that goes accross the barrel and torques itself into place. without it the barrel will flex downward when the m203 is mounted.

    natrally it just transitioned over to the civilian market for the "cool" factor (not to be confused w/ tactical) and serves no real purpose on a gun that will never have a m203 mounted.
